Data Engineer - Birmingham

Job description

As part of the world's largest contract caterer, Compass Group UK&I operates multiple brands in the education, business, healthcare, government, defence, sports and leisure industries where we provide both food and soft facilities management services.

We are looking for a hands-on, collaborative Data Engineer with an understanding on how applications can work together to join the E15 Programme. In this role, you will have the chance to build pipelines that will deliver data solutions to our various businesses within Compass Group UK. You will help bring best practices to the team while working with a collaborative group of data stewards. We are focused on gathering data for the business to build reports, using a tech stack of primarily Informatica and Redshift, with other AWS services as needed. This role requires an understanding of how systems work together.

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with our reporting, analytics, and data science teams to understand data sources and business requirements
  • Work within a collaborative team, adhering to Agile best practices, documentation, and knowledge sharing
  • Gather, clean, enrich, and transform data through data pipelines using Informatica
  • Monitor pipeline performance and document infrastructure changes
  • Adhere to best practices for ETL and programming
  • Contribute to our overall architecture and pipeline design and make contributions to the product roadmap
  • Understand what Data Exists - where, in what format, volume of data, current processes to maintain, ownership, obtain contact details/relationship owners of data
  • Understand what Data does not exist, where it should, in what format it needs to be captured, volume of data, & who in business needs to set up process to maintain & own
  • Be able to assist in the testing phase with the testing criteria that need to be met from the original requirements to ensure the project has delivered.
  • Discuss testing with the business and incorporate their feedback
  • BAU activities on all pipelines

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Analytics, or related field
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in ETL or Data Engineering role, building and implementing data pipelines
  • Informatica experience strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of data structures and data warehouses
  • Strong skills with SQL with the ability to write efficient queries
  • Previous experience working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with an attention to detail
  • Familiarity with event driven architecture
  • Familiarity with AWS
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or similar task management tool
