Job Introduction

The BBC’s world-class online products (iPlayer, News, Sport, Sounds, and more) reach millions of audience members every week, and create upwards of 1 Billion rows of data per day.

Working in a team of around 15 Data Scientists and Engineers you will be involved in a wide variety of machine learning projects. These range from clustering interaction data to gain insights into audience behaviour, to econometric modelling to predict future media consumption.

The CCOG Data Science team focuses on using ML and AI approaches in more of consulting area looking at questions such as: what content should we commission; what will the current content slate deliver for the business in the next 18 months; forecasting the BBC markets; setting business targets.

Main Responsibilities

  • Combine data from a variety of sources, using SQL to interact with our Cloud databases
  • Select the appropriate algorithmic approach to solve a given problem
  • Discuss and implement the solution, from proof of concept to production
  • Using our in-house machine learning platform, programming in R or Python
  • Present the outcome back to stakeholders from a wide range of BBC departments

Are you the right candidate?

Ideally You Will Have

  • A degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science or relevant experience
  • Experience in a previous data role
  • A hands-on approach to problem solving, from understanding the impact down to mathematical details
  • Good programming skills with R or Python
  • Good working knowledge of SQL and experience querying large datasets
  • Experience building machine learning models and deploying them into production
  • A desire to interact with stakeholders and translating business problems into practical solutions
  • Good team working and communication skills
