Job Summary

A dynamic role for a skilled analyst with excellent research andcommunication skills

The primary responsibility of the Ministry's Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch (FAIB) is to provide forest analysis and inventory information to assist in meeting the Resource Stewardship Division's stewardship mandate, the Chief Forester's statutory responsibilities, and critical information needs of the Ministry and the natural resource sector. The Branch's two key programs (Forest Analysis and Forest Inventory) provide critical forest analysis, inventory data, strategic direction, and policy support to enable sustainable forest resource management and the determination of allowable annual cut for most of the province. The Branch also contributes to informing management and decision making by providing information and analysis that help explore the implications associated with a wide range of current and evolving resource issues and practices.

The Data Scientist is the lead computing and data analysis expert for the Inventory Analysis and Reporting team. The Data Scientist works closely with other FAIB scientists to complete analyses of large ground sampling and inventory datasets to continually improve on the information available to inform forest management and decision making. This role also requires proactive engagement of scientific and policy experts in other branches and ministries. The position undertakes independent professional data analysis and represents the ministry at partner or stakeholder meetings.

Job Requirements

  • Post-graduate degree in a related field* and at least 1 years related experience**, or a degree in a related field and at least 2 years related experience***.
  • Minimum 3 years of R programming experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience with forest mensuration and the BC forest inventory.
  • Related education fields include data science, computer science, forestry, biometrics, ecology, GIS, statistics, or mathematics.
  • Academic experience may be considered.
  • Related experience may include:
  • Experience in designing and executing analyses of large datasets.
  • Experience analyzing data using R or SAS.
  • Experience developing open-source code using collaborative, version-control software such as GitHub.
  • Experience in forest mensuration and sampling, forest inventory projection models, or forest biomass and carbon modelling.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • 3 years or more experience and demonstrated knowledgein forest mensuration and sampling, forest inventory projection models, or forest biomass and carbon modelling.
  • 3 years or more experience and demonstrated abilities processing and analyzing data usingSAS.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
