RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of Director of Digital Health the incumbent will play a central role in a team that is building the data backbone for a learning health system at the MUHC.

The data scientist is responsible for guiding the establishment of a modern data science working environment, contributing to the structuring and cleaning of data sources, and leading the development, evaluation and deployment of predictive algorithms and other machine learning (ML) based innovations for use in healthcare research and practice. The individual will design, implement and support statistical and ML models for use in clinical, administrative, and research settings.

The goal is to ensure the ongoing operation of a modern clinical and research data analytics ecosystem for use by the MUHC and RI-MUHC communities. This ecosystem will concurrently facilitate research and clinical performance and quality operations, including dashboard-based tracking and quality assessment.

General Duties

  • Build, deploy and maintain AI and ML enabled care workflows. This includes working with others at the MUHC to design and develop solutions to the problems undertaken by the Unit,
  • Inform the acquisition and configuration of tools, platforms and strategies used by the Unit and MUHC partners to manage the lifecycle of building models from healthcare data,
  • Structure and clean core data sources, including: establishing quality assurance monitoring, deidentification and entity extraction from free-text, mapping of system data to common data model (i.e., OMOP), and
  • Train, develop, and validate researcher-built or vendor provided machine learning algorithms on hospital data with strong quality control checks and bias assessments.

Education / Experience

  • PhD/MS degree in statistics, informatics, or related field,
  • PhD : Experience preferred,
  • MS Degree: 4+ years of related experience with applied problems,
  • Ability to write code in SQL, R, and Python for processing large datasets in distributed cloud environments, and experience in processing and analyzing healthcare data, particularly in HL7 formats,
  • Experience developing, evaluating, and implementing machine learning models,
  • Experience working with clinicians and researchers across disciplines to develop approaches for use in clinical care,
  • Experience working in cloud environments or working in a healthcare organization,
  • Graduate level understanding of techniques in machine learning, knowledge representation, and artificial intelligence along with a strong understanding of statistics,
  • Knowledge of software development, machine learning, and technology infrastructure,
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, along with demonstrated creativity and latitude in problem solving, including the ability to prioritize and execute multiple competing tasks.

Additional information

Status: Full time

Pay Scale: Commensurate with education and experience / $68,140.80 - $ 126,562.80.

Work Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Work Site: Glen Site, MUHC
