Job description

The future you want is within reach.

At PCL, we build the places where life happens and find camaraderie in the process. We're a community of builders committed to building better communities. That's why we're always looking ahead, and not just to the next project or what's next in our industry.

We’re also looking at what’s next for you and how we can help you build a career you’re proud of. As a Data Scientist at PCL, you will get the opportunity for challenging work assignments in a supportive work environment that promotes personal and professional growth.

One of our functions is data science: the application of modern data visualization techniques, machine learning techniques, and artificial intelligence to develop insights and address business challenges.

The successful candidate will work closely with professionals in widely varying disciplines to help deliver solutions that make our processes and systems smarter. We have a focus on custom digital product development, and on delivering value to our field personnel. You will be trained to use the innovative tech platforms on which we work.

Here's how a(n) Data Scientist for our Edmonton Industrial Management office contributes to our team:

Responsibilities

  • Build data-driven products for business use.
  • Prepare data sets and pipelines for exploratory analysis, statistical and ML modeling, and downstream use.
  • Help your colleagues assess AI/ML model performance and propose paths for potential improvement.
  • Prepare data visualizations using industry-leading tools to develop and summarize insights for stakeholders.
  • Document your results - tell the story of the work, the successes, and the lessons learned for posterity.
  • Propose and train machine learning systems using data annotation and benchmarking techniques.
  • Keep an open mind, and apply your unique skills and determination where there's opportunity.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to Travel: Depending on the company and role, some travel to project sites may be required for data collection, meetings, or on-site analysis.
  • Portfolio or Case Studies: Candidates may be asked to provide a portfolio and discuss their past work.

Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in computing science, engineering, applied mathematics or similar.
  • Postgraduate certification or diploma in data science and a demonstrated commitment to progressive learning.
  • 3-5 years' experience in industrial or AEC industries is helpful.
  • Excellent analytical skills – the ability to quickly analyze processes and data to identify and visualize key insights – as evidenced by projects requiring the analysis of large datasets on complex processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creativity in developing new approaches to a product or analysis.
  • Experience with building analytical and predictive models using both traditional statistical-learning models (think scikit) and deep learning frameworks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. You'll work with both experts in the field as well as business staff; adaptive, precise, and flexible communication with a breadth of partners and audiences is necessary.
  • Technical experience includes the Pydata stack, Tensorflow/Keras, R, Tableau/PowerBI/D3 visualization, graph processing, Spark/Databricks, SQL, extensile low-code deployment platforms like Streamlit or Retool, git/GitHub.
  • Working knowledge of BIM and GIS/geolocation and their applications to field use is helpful.
