Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics. We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments – with patients and participants at the heart of it all.

Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and innovative Genomic Data Scientist to join our cutting-edge team based on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

You will work in an agile, collaborative environment as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing strong programming skills for germline and somatic variant analyses for our Long Reads pipeline squad.

Everyday Responsibilities Include

Researching scientific literature, identifying new approaches to genome analysis, and contributing to the publication and dissemination of our findings.

Developing and fine-tuning algorithms for variant prioritization and classification for cancer diagnostics and screening.

Benchmarking and improving tools for processing and analyzing whole genome data (e.g., alignment, variant callers, quality control), and performing custom computational analyses.

Skills

Managing the full cycle of NGS data analysis, from sequencing QC to annotation and prioritization of variantsSkills and experience for success:

Strong programming skills in Python and R.

Knowledge of statistics and/or machine learning.

Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing algorithms.

Qualifications

Expertise in cancer genomics, understanding tumor drivers, and interpreting genomic data through targeted pathways.

Proficiency in using Python for efficient data processing and analysis.

Hands-on experience in developing high-quality, reusable code, with a strong command of Git and CI/CD practices.

Ability to evaluate statistical and machine learning techniques, apply them in practical scenarios, and interpret results while considering the assumptions and limitations of the methods.

Experience working in cross-functional analytical team in an academic or industry setting.
