We are looking for a Principal Data Scientist who wants to be part of a purpose-driven organization that’s focused on helping our clients, colleagues and communities thrive. Stantec’s Digital Practice team works closely with project managers and clients to develop solutions that enable our clients to have top tier information access and analytics. This journey includes identifying, defining, and developing those products. Several products and service-oriented solutions have been developed at version 1.0 and more are being defined. Our goal is to transform the water industry with best-in-class digital solutions. These solutions cover the complete project and water lifecycle, from planning to operations, and watershed management to wastewater treatment. Your Key Responsibilities

Do: Project Delivery

  • Development of top tier digital solutions for analytical dashboards and interfaces
  • Build out current and future digital solutions by designing and implementing data analysis techniques
  • Perform product and project consulting work
  • Implement best practices in data science to meet project objectives using a code-based approach. Focus on developing for reusability.
  • Define data requirements to support project objectives, determine quality of input data, quantifying uncertainty of results, and designing traditional and machine learning based approaches for analysis.

Win: Support and Lead Business Development Activities

  • Develop positive relationships with clients, earn their confidence and become a trusted advisor.
  • Develop digital approaches for Statements of Qualifications and Proposals and prepare the data science aspects for project interviews conducted by clients.
  • Participate in local and national professional associations and committees to support Stantec’s brand and presence in the Water industry.

Manage: Supervise and Mentor Developing Professionals

  • Mentor and coach developing professionals to guide their career development objectives
  • Review team’s work and provide technical guidance on design approach and challenges
  • Conduct work in a safe manner and promote health and safety within the office and outside of the office while visiting clients and job sites.
  • Effectively lead, challenge and inspire staff to work together (even if we are apart) by being a visible leader of our Water Digital Solutions business and being accessible to our staff.

Innovate: Develop and Deploy Innovative Solutions

  • Collaborate with Stantec’s Office of Innovation to support global knowledge sharing groups that foster and grow innovative ideas to address digital solutions to water challenges.
  • Collaborate with our innovation and research teams to develop and deploy innovative digital solutions to address regulatory drivers, aging infrastructure, cost efficiency, power consumption, and other water demands.
  • This requires some travel to attend meetings with clients.
  • You will provide direction to a Digital Solutions team in various locations

Qualifications

Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to design and implement reusable data analysis techniques based on requirements, specifications, or prototypes
  • Ability to understand storyboards, wireframes, and simple prototypes; and, how to develop them into real solutions.
  • Experience working with operational technologies in an industrial, automation, or water treatment context is a must. This includes working with data sets from industrial control systems such as SCADA, PLCs, and DCS
  • Experience with at least one business intelligence platform such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau.
  • Experience working with web-based APIs using JSON or XML objects.
  • Experience with machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow and resources such as Azure Machine Learning.
  • Experience with streaming data analytics.
  • Experience with big data tools such as Hadoop, Spark, or DataBricks.
  • Experience working with location data and maps is preferred.
  • Experience with Python, R, or SCALA is preferred.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps and Jira is preferred.
  • Ability to travel to attend meetings with clients
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting (in person and virtually) and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Possesses excellent time-management skills, thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and available resources.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, along with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Experience working in a consultant role, preferred
  • Possess a hard-working and positive attitude.

Education and Experience

Computer Science or Engineering related bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Minimum of 8 years of experience as a data scientist extracting, analyze and interpreting large amounts of data from a range of sources, using algorithmic, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning and statistical tools. Experience must include developing either internal or external products.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
