Role profile:
As the Senior Data Engineer you be the key operational and hands-on leader to shape and drive a data platform strategy execution within the Digital Product Group. You will work closely with other teams in a cross-functional set-up.
The Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for driving future architectural decisions, including a Cloud data strategy, data warehouse modernisation and data delivery platform. You will act as a key member of the Digital Product Group, work with the product teams to design and implement modern, scalable data solutions using a range of new and emerging technologies driving innovation in the data space.
Enter the key responsibilities of the role:
  • Hands on approach to solutions definition and development (able to code yourself if/as needed)
  • Data platform architecture, CI/CD automation, automated testing and code quality.
  • Support our transition from on-premises solutions to our cloud first strategy (AWS/GCP/Azure)
  • Provide problem-solving support, coaching, direction, and guidance to the wider team as part of the Data Community for Excellence.
  • Evaluate and identify appropriate technology stacks and platforms, including data pipeline tools and methods to easily move data around the organisation.
  • Guide and coach on Agile techniques and ways of working to help improve teams and software development process.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices.
  • Encourage standardisation of technologies, and evolution of best practices by collaborating with peers and releasing code.
  • Be very comfortable to communicate to a broad set of senior stakeholders in non-technical language.
  • Ensuring collaboration and cooperation in key projects between incumbent team members and future team members.
Experience and skills required:
  • Demonstrate 10+ years in senior engineering and technology roles working with data engineering teams, delivering and building data solutions - while remaining hands-on.
  • 5+ years cloud expertise – AWS, Lambda, EC2, IaC, EMR.
  • 10+ years experience in developing applications in distributed architecture model based on Microservices and containerisation.
  • 10+ years hands on experience coding data engineering for data warehouse solutions within SQL, ELT, Spark, Java/Scala/Python or equivalent, Oracle/PostgreSQL.
  • 10+ years experience of working with Agile Delivery teams and a knowledge of DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, SonarQube & Nexus.
  • Event stream processing experience (Kafka or similar) and experience in building event-based services.
  • Strong examples of coaching, facilitating and guiding others – developing and mentoring others to do the right thing.
  • Experience of automated data quality testing, QA and documentation, data modelling and data wrangling.
  • A depth and breadth understanding of the data engineering space - with the ability to stay current and up to date on trends and technologies.
  • Understanding of modern data processing and data platform technologies (esp. AWS & Snowflake) and able to discuss their pros and cons to lead to a coherent solution design.
  • You will be a dedicated person that creates meaningful change through collaboration, cooperation and teamwork.
  • To be a self-starter, a logical thinker and a quick learner, with strong initiative and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
