Passionate about Computational/Data Science, AI, and digital innovation? Excited about cutting-edge digital technologies? Curious about how to apply digital research for energy transition solutions?
This role covers all the above and much more.
Join us in pushing the boundaries of Chemometrics and Digital Chemistry in Computational Science and Digital Innovation and #makethefuture together.
Where You Fit In
Chemometrics and Digital Chemistry is at the forefront of the energy transition; be it for the design of digital chemistry solutions for catalysts, chemicals, fuels, lubes in Shell’s conventional product portfolio or in the energy transition portfolio for Hydrogen and storage, to name a few. You are going to be a key part of pushing the frontiers of digital innovation in chemometrics, analytical chemistry, and materials science, applying multivariate statistical and chemometric modeling and optimization for accelerating the design and development of digital products, including new chemometric and AI methodology. As an expert in multivariate statistical analysis and process control, you would be required to work on projects and contribute to the growth of the team portfolio in Catalysis, Chemicals, and Renewable Energy Solutions.
What is the Role?
As Data Scientist with expertise in process chemometrics and multivariate statistical modeling, you’ll be leading wide-ranging analysis of process data to help develop and deliver solutions for our downstream asset challenges, enabling insights that will ultimately improve Shell’s processes and drive performance.
The candidate will be assigned initially on “secondment” in the Pernis location for a one-year assignment to work in an embedded team. They will work on the delivery of data science and process modeling projects in Pernis (refining plant) and Moerdijk (chemical plant) in the NL in close collaboration with other team members.
The candidate will be part of a central team in Project & Technology, which is supporting the delivery of R&D and consultancy projects to different businesses in Catalysis, Fuels, and Lubes, Chemicals, Biodomain, etc. After the one-year secondment, the candidate will be delivering in the Chemometrics & Digital Chemistry portfolio worldwide.
More specifically, your role will entail:
Delivery and impact: you’ll be designing bespoke statistical process control systems for fault detection and diagnosis, creating innovative solutions using data-driven AI and data science models in collaboration with other team members, and third parties, and developing digital solutions for the use of analytical and process data. Alongside your technical expertise, you’ll also be calling on your natural people skills, confidently communicating business needs into data solutions, and presenting analytic results back into the business language to a wide range of stakeholders, from scientists and engineers to managers in the industry and academia.
External trends: You will need to keep an eye on and leverage external trends to bring cutting-edge innovation in this space. Leveraging open innovation and a commercial mindset is a critical element of this role.
Differentiated capability: you will need to continue building on and expand on our differentiated expertise in process chemometrics in Catalysis R&D and Manufacturing, Refining, Chemicals in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and new areas such as real-time product optimization in GTL, LNG, and New Energies interfacing with product owners and SMEs in PTX and assets. The main focus for this position will be to work on Pernis/Moerdijk, being parented to Downstream but working in the Chemometrics and Digital Chemistry team in PTX/D.
What We Need from You
When it comes to nurturing collaborative stakeholder relations it’s your excellent people skills that will make the difference. You will inspire customers to make changes that will have a direct impact on delivery and our commercial success. Furthermore, you will have:
Advanced Degree in Chemometrics, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering with a strong background on data analysis or related qualification, Ph.D. level preferred (MSc. + significant professional experience will be considered)
Proficient in process data modeling, monitoring, and optimization (batch and continuous processes) using AI and/or Data Science methods
Knowledge in the design of experiments, general linear modeling, multivariate analysis, statistical modeling, and/or time series modeling is a plus
A practical common-sense approach to problem-solving and attention to detail
Drive, enthusiasm, and self-motivation to work in a dynamic environment in manufacturing assets
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal (Dutch and English)
Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with people at all levels
Programming or scripting skills (e.g. Python, R, Matlab) and experience with chemometrics/statistical software, e.g. PLS toolbox, Minitab, StatsGraphics
Significant experience and track record of strategic business delivery from R&D and consultancy projects
