Data Product - Principal Data Engineer

Job description

The Position

Purpose:

PTE is the new organization that will catalyze the global development and execution of PT’s Digital and Operational Excellence strategy to enable PT to realize our performance promises. We will build a strong cross-functional and inclusive community, put the power of data into the hands of our people, further develop the Lean and Digital skills across PT, and scale up our Digital and Advanced Analytics solutions, for the benefit of our colleagues and patients.

PTE’s Digital Data Backbone Chapter will enable this vision by making FAIR data available across the organization establishing a decentralized, value driven and data product centric approach.

Job Description:

The Multiplier Team

As Technical Delivery Lead you are part of the Data Product Multiplier Team and you work on a wide range of digital use cases across all Pharma Technical Operations (PT) functions. The Multiplier Team serves as a “template team”, with the core directive to multiply itself: you act as trainer and coach to form and enable other data product delivery teams throughout the organization; globally and locally. You do this by applying our Data Mesh Operating Model to new digital use cases in partnership with a team which will later on be responsible for the use case and autonomously deliver data products.

For established data product teams, the Multiplier Team continues to act as advisor and center of excellence. In turn, the Multiplier Team continues to ensure that established data product teams follow standard processes and common ways of working.

Roche’s Data Mesh Operating Model is an end-to-end, value-driven approach to the management of decentralized data products, comprising elements of strategy & roadmap, portfolio management, design thinking, product management, agile software delivery, DevOps and DataOps. Members of the Multiplier Team are experts in this process and lead by example; individual members are specialized in certain areas. The Data Mesh implementation is an enterprise wide initiative accelerated by Roche Data Insights (RDI) - PT’s Enablement Team works closely with RDI and other Enablement Teams across the Enterprise. As a prerequisite this requires mature data management and data governance at the business domain level. Here the Multiplier Team plays a pivotal role in making sure that new requirements or changes concerning the data product are articulated and agreed well in advance.

The Data Product - Principal Data Engineer

In your role as Principal Data Engineer you support successful implementation and evolution of data products.

  • You bring a strategic mindset, and align the business and technological concerns across stakeholders
  • You are able to communicate the consequences of technical choices and decisions on deliverability of products and team performance
  • You work with data infrastructure teams such that the creation, usage, and governance of data products is well supported with technology
  • You maintain close connections to a network of technology SMEs in IT, IT/OT and the business functions to keep up-to-date with and influence current and evolving technologies
  • You bring in technology SMEs and experts from your network as needed
  • You establish structures that balance the autonomy and agility of data product teams with global interoperability and platform standardization ambitions
  • You co-develop tooling, training and templates to enable fast onboarding and help successfully deliver data products for the product delivery teams
  • You oversee and take part in the entire cycle of evolutionary software delivery from ideation to deployment and everything in between

Ultimately, as part of the Multiplier Team, you are training future Data Product Teams on technical data product delivery and evolvement.

Job Requirements (Capabilities/Skills):

The Multiplier Team

All Multiplier Team members promote, coach and train the data mesh methodology across all domains in the PT organization. The team members

  • Have exceptional communication, facilitation and interviewing skills
  • Demonstrate strong leadership behaviors
  • Have a track record of successfully upskilling / training co-workers and of building impactful teams
  • Possess strong influencing and stakeholder management skills
  • Have practical experience in working in a product team
  • Are aware of organizational change management methodologies

The Multiplier Team exhibits an entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm, commitment and proactivity. Members lead without authority, radiate competence and success.

Data Product - Principal Data Engineer

As Principal Data Engineer you additionally bring at least 10 years of industry experience in data system delivery roles. You have

  • Deep, applied knowledge of agile software development
  • Experience with continuous delivery and continuous integration (CI/CD)
  • Worked with data intensive analytical technologies
  • Engineered data intensive systems
  • Delivered software products at enterprise scale
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP)
  • A consistent record of communicating and working with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from data engineers and scientists to senior business leaders
  • Sound knowledge of modern data architecture methods and approaches (Domain-Driven Design, FAIR principles, etc.)

Although this is a role with a focus on technology, you are not putting technology first. You acknowledge the most meaningful success factors in any digitalization effort: streamlined business processes, standardization, governance and organizational change aspects. This reflects in the strategies you develop, your communication with stakeholders and in the decisions you are making.
