• Creation of transformative value through the safe and effective discovery of two or more superior-value mineral deposits every decade; and
• Maximizing value realization from Anglo American’s portfolio of assets by implementing leading operational geoscience effectiveness.

Reporting to the Lead Geospatial Information and working closely with the GDG discovery team you will play a key role leveraging of geospatial, geoscientific and other contextual data sets, to conduct various data science studies and subsequently generate supporting workflows in order to accelerate the analysis and discernment of discovery opportunities.

This role will be rewarding and varied and will include:

• Supporting the delivery of timely global actionable intelligence to the generative teams’ through the development of tools and analysis for:
  • Prospectivity for key mineral systems
  • Operational Risk relevant to Discovery
  • Competitor activities
  • Prioritized Discovery Opportunities at various scales
• Support development of novel and/or materially improved applications of global geospatial multidisciplinary data, to enable prioritization of prospective search space
• Assisting the Discovery team in designing data capture / experimental setups for exploratory work, or changes in process / data capture in existing systems
• Performing exploratory data analysis, and provide rapid iterations of analysis to refine posed problems, and identify potential solutions.
• Developing statistical models, algorithms and/or machine learning algorithms to analyse data and address a particular business question.
• Mentoring and development of Data Geoscientists within the team
• Ensure Discovery strategy and priorities are reflected in the work program

To be successful in this role, you will be Degree qualified in Geoscience, Metallurgy, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or Computer Science. A Masters in Data Science, Statistical Modelling or other relevant filed is also highly desirable.

You will be experienced in Geoscience, Hard Rock Geology, or Geophysics. You will also have the following:

• Advanced understanding and experience of applied GIS and geospatial data structures
• Demonstrated success working with multidisciplinary technical and global teams.
• Mathematical / statistical modelling
• Coding (working knowledge of Python preferred)
• Demonstrated success working in mining, processing, manufacturing, resource industries or geosciences is preferred
• Working knowledge of common machine learning algorithms used in regression, classification and time-series prediction highly desirable
• Demonstrated ability to apply a systematic, knowledge-based problem-solving approach and structured methodologies (such as root cause analysis and statistical analysis) to investigate risks and opportunities to create effective, value-add technical solutions.
• In-depth understanding of the mining value chain
• Project Management skills – ability to drive delivery of technical solutions in projects and operations
