Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)

Gas Market Regulatory Data Analyst

Job description

Who is AEMO?

We are the Australian Energy Market Operator. AEMO’s role is to design and operate a sustainable energy system that provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and gas today, and to enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. All Australian governments are now committed to a net-zero economy for Australia by 2050, the first step of which is a net-zero energy system. We are collaborating with industry and other stakeholders to engineer electricity grids that can handle 100 per cent instantaneous renewable generation by 2025, and changes to the gas system and markets to support biomethane and hydrogen. AEMO also plays a significant role in the east coast gas market, which has recently expanded to assessing if there is enough natural gas for customers, including electricity generators. The transition to a renewable energy system is occurring at a world-leading pace. It is an exciting, momentous time to be part of this mission.

About The Role

The market analyst role within the Gas Markets and System Operations Group directly supports the operation of Australia’s east coast gas markets. It involves:
  • Engaging with market participants and industry stakeholders on the operation of the markets
  • Analysing data and providing insights both within AEMO and externally
  • Working on projects to uplift market systems
  • Implementing market reforms (such as the integration of hydrogen and renewable gases into gas markets, measures to improve the transparency of gas markets, etc.)

We are looking to fill multiple positions and are seeking candidates for junior and senior roles.

This is an outstanding opportunity for those who want to be at the centre of change in the energy industry and who want to contribute to Australia’s energy future.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Derive insights from market events, outcomes, and trends to inform key stakeholders of market behaviours and opportunities for market improvement
  • Contribute to reports for publication on market events and present findings at forums/meetings on market outcomes
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to provide information, analysis, and education
  • Collaborate with the jurisdictions, regulators, and broader gas industry to implement regulatory change and improvements to the gas markets
  • Participate in gas market regulatory reform projects and help run consultation processes and forums that will result in meaningful change to outcomes for gas market participants
  • Lead business area involvement in IT projects to uplift market systems and deliver improved functionality on time and on budget
  • Provide support for real-time gas market operations, ensuring continued compliance with gas market rules and procedures
  • Actively participate in the management of IT changes, representing business teams at IT change management meetings and managing risks to market system operations
  • Develop Power BI dashboards and SQL queries to provide insight into market operations and streamline reporting
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and prepare business cases while considering return on investment, risk, and compliance

What You Will Bring To The Role
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Engineering, Data Science, IT, Economics, etc.)
  • Demonstrated capability in supporting technical teams to solve complex problems
  • Experience in interpreting data and preparing clear and concise reports and procedures
  • Industry experience and knowledge of gas markets is looked on favourably

Some Of Our Employment Benefits
