Job Title: Engineering Data Scientist


Salary Grade: £36,600 - £45,700 (depending on experience)


Location : Peterborough, Cambridgeshire


STIP Bonus: up to 10%


25 days annual leave


Contributory pension scheme - Caterpillar will double the employee's contribution Up to 10%

The Engineering Data Systems team is part of the systems engineering team within the Industrial Power Systems Division. The team was created in 2018 from specialist personnel from the mechanical & performance systems teams, with the purpose of developing and deploying engineering analytics tools and processes. These tools and processes enable the product development teams to extract maximum knowledge from large amounts of test bed and in machine data from power system products in development, and production. The team combines a unique blend of ‘big data’ data analytics and process automation with specialist engineering skill sets. The team supports the Systems Team vision to be ready for future power system solution development and to continue to develop value from our data for our engineering development teams and our power-system customers.


Job Responsibilities And Duties


  • Access and navigate around our data systems to utilise data to resolve engineering & business problems
  • Apply a multidisciplinary approach to support complex engineering analysis and the development of business intelligence via data analytics
  • Perform analysis and report out using easy to consumable visualisations
  • Communicate analytical solutions and workflows at a technical and leader level in support of technical and stakeholder reviews
  • Document work and processes to aid repeatability of analytics and democratisation of analytics
  • Apply cutting edge data science techniques on engineering big data, deriving hidden insights and value
  • Influence future data infrastructure and technologies that the department adopts, helping to drive a data driven decision making culture
  • Deploy frequently used analytics to engineering teams through web apps, dashboards and automation


Skills And Experience


Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:


  • Demonstrated experience of data analysis (any platform)
  • Experience of writing code (any code)
  • Demonstrated experience of work within an engineering or data analytics field


Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:


  • Scripting in Python including science, web application and SQL libraries
  • Neural networks and machine learning algorithms – e.g. Keras, Tensorflow, scikit-learn, pytorch, Maxflow, KNIME, etc
  • Database utilisation e.g. mySQL, Snowflake, Oracle
  • Iterative and collaborative code development experience and version control - Jupyter notebooks, DevOps, Agile framework or Git
  • Data manipulation experience – using Alteryx, Excel, Power Automate or other data tools
  • Data visualisation & analysis - Tableau, DIAdem, Seeq, PowerBI, Mini-tab, Concerto or other
  • Statistical analysis
  • Deployment of code in cloud computing environments e.g. AWS, Azure, etc
  • Experience in or knowledge of IC engine technology, engine control systems or engine performance development
