Singapore, Permanent, Full time. As part of its international development programme, and in order to strengthen its responsible investing team, Scientific Beta is recruiting a Lead Data Scientist (ESG) for its head office in Singapore.

About Scientific Beta

As part of its policy of transferring know-how to the industry, EDHEC Business School established Scientific Beta in December 2012. Scientific Beta is an original initiative, which aims to favour the adoption of the latest advances in smart beta design and implementation by the whole investment industry. Its academic origin provides the foundation for its strategy: offer, in the best economic conditions possible, the smart beta solutions that are most proven scientifically with full transparency of both the methods and the associated risks.

At end 2019, assets tracking Scientific Beta smart beta indices reached USD 59bn. Scientific Beta has a dedicated team of 52 people who cover client support, development, production and promotion of its index offering.

On January 31, 2020, Singapore Exchange acquired a majority stake in Scientific Beta. SGX will maintain the strong collaboration with EDHEC Business School, and principles of independent, empirical-based academic research, that have benefited Scientific Beta’s development to date.

Main tasks:

• Author blueprints for the creative use of data and models to address portfolio management ESG integration needs, with particular emphasis on climate scenario alignment;
• Identify and assess data acquisition opportunities available from commercial data vendors and open sources and design data acquisition strategy;
• Design and/or implement structured and unstructured data acquisition processes and data processing models, and author/maintain related code;
• Lead the build-up and maintenance of databases on environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators;
• Organise and supervise the work of quantitative and data analysts;
• Design processes to ensure the quality and integrity of data at the input and output stages, and author/maintain related code;
• Develop or supervise the development of other tools and deliverables to improve the productivity of data acquisition and processing.

Education and Experience:

Research Degree (Master of Science or Ph.D.)
Work experience as a Researcher and Data Scientist (machine learning being a must-have), preferably in the financial industry;
Familiarity with financial statements and data, and financial data platforms;
Experience of climate scenarios and familiarity with climate portfolio alignment theories, metrics and challenges would be significant pluses.

Skills and Attitudes:

Demonstrated ability to design and implement applied research programs producing high-quality results for decision makers;
Data acquisition automation and machine learning;
Statistical and coding skills (e.g. MATLAB, SQL, Python);
Team/project management;
Self-motivation.

The salary will be determined according to the company’s pay scale, based on the candidate’s qualifications and prior experience.
