Location: Remote/Virtual - Must be a Michigan Resident

Purpose: This position functions as one of the data analysts for MDHHS’s Infection Prevention Resource and Assessment Team (IPRAT) for COVID-19 (and other infections of interest). Employees in this job complete or oversee a variety of professional research and analysis assignments for the purpose of evaluation, assessment, planning, development, and implementation of various departmental programs or service.
Specifically, the candidate will assist with the State of Michigan’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic by performing remote and in-person site visits to nursing facilities (or other congregate care settings) and assist by providing data support to specimen submission, case investigation, medical record abstraction, and contact tracing within various settings. This candidate should have strong analytic and organizational skills to function in this role with varying team members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in disease outbreak investigations, including collecting data from local agencies and interviewing cases and controls.
  • Assembles data bases and other information, such as literature articles, for analysis of health problems
  • Participates in the design and management of surveillance systems for diseases of public health importance.
  • Performs epidemiological and statistical analyses on data and prepares results for review.
  • Collects disease or condition surveillance information and analyzes surveillance data.
  • Produces routine statistical summary reports and special reports as needed.
  • Manages data quality in IPRAT database and assist with queries for grant submission.
  • Disseminates results of investigations, special studies, routine surveillance, and analyses of health outcome data.
  • Create data analytics tools that would help with evaluating and monitoring a project.
  • Represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:


Education: Possession of a master’s degree in nursing, public health, or health related field.

Experience: No prior work experience is required; however, the candidate should demonstrate knowledge of the application of computers for the analysis and management of epidemiological data. Microsoft Office, R and SAS software will be utilized.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 75% of the time. Standard office environment. Will require vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position (e.g., healthcare facility site visits). Hybrid office status with working remote, traveling for site visits, and traveling approximately twice per month to Lansing for scheduled office day.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This person is a key member of MDHHS’s response to the COVID pandemic and other infections of interest. The candidate will provide data analytic support to healthcare facilities and State and local partners with respect to preventing the transmission of COVID in nursing facilities, and other congregate settings. The candidate will help to complete standard forms as it relates to specimen submission, infection control assessment, and medical record chart abstraction. The data analyst will be responsible for data quality, data submission, and data analysis.
