This role can be based in any state across Australia and it can be a fully remote role.
How will I help?
The Lead Data Engineer role provides the technical expertise and dedicated technical focus required to deliver on Westpac’s
next generation technology capabilities including data analytics, platform development, specialised application development, systems, and processes.
This role will operate predominantly in an Agile environment, and such will be required to support the technology capabilities to effectively deliver value to customers.
This role is for individuals who want to develop their knowledge and skills in an area of specialisation, along with the desire and ability to learn across disciplines and lead engineering teams.

Your responsibilities will include the following:
- Complete the design, development and testing of components that deliver on Westpac’s technology capability with the goal of providing reliable, stable and operationally sound applications, systems and infrastructure that meet business requirements and industry best practices
- Apply Design Thinking principles such as customer empathy, creative collaboration and test and learn ensuring solutions address customer needs and are viable and feasible for the business
- Specify interfaces and translate logical designs into physical designs taking account target environment, performance & security requirements, and existing systems
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of applications throughout lifecycle and provide technical input to the planning of future application and maintenance requirements
- Employ CI/CD and DevOps practices that are endorsed by Customer Services & Technology and ensure maximum leverage of existing platform services.
- Consistently apply tools, standards, methods, and processes in developing solutions to ensure that quality applications are developed with consistent maintainable code which supports risk and compliance management
- Consistently challenge the status quo, finding innovative ways of achieving business outcomes to advance technology solutions.

What do I need?
To be set up for success in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience in software development, most recently in the Big Data technologies.
- Experience in technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive, HBase, Python, Java, Spring Boot, Git, Flink, Cosmos DB, Akka, Scala, SQL, Synapse
- Fundamental knowledge and experience in one technical specialism, such as a sub-domain or language
- Analysis, problem solving, troubleshooting and consultative skills
- Hands-on experience with DevOps pipelines, in particular Azure DevOps and Jenkins.
- Experience designing for cloud platforms, including serverless architecture, preferably Azure.
- Background in software engineering, and agile methodologies and tools (Jira / Confluence).
- Sound verbal and written communication skills using an open, clear, and engaging manner
- Passion for becoming a leader in your technical domain expertise area
