Job description

Join our Science team in our ambition to build the world's best vertically integrated platform for ML driven mineral discovery

About Fleet Space Technologies

Fleet is a space-enabled exploration technology company on a mission to dramatically accelerate the discovery of critical minerals needed to decarbonize our global economy.

Our approach is to combine space technology, proprietary seismic sensors, cutting edge Ambient Noise Tomography, and machine learning to provide the world’s first scalable 3D exploration dataset with near-real-time insights to guide active exploration programs far more efficiently to new deposits. This is Fleet’s flagship product, ExoSphere - a space-enabled solution for mineral exploration in real-time, in 3D, and under cover with very low environmental impact. Since launching ExoSphere in March 2022, Fleet has signed contracts with over 30 clients including Rio Tinto, Barrick Gold and Core Lithium and completed over 120 Ambient Noise Tomography surveys, more than any other company in the world.

As part of Fleet’s founding vision to connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has rapidly grown to over 120 employees including a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond. We have raised over AUD $85M in venture funding, backed by premier investors including Blackbird, Grok, and In-Q-Tel; and in 2023 we were recognized by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) on their Fast 100 list - as the #1 fastest growing technology company in Australia!

The Team

The Science Team at Fleet Space Technologies is composed of team-oriented technical experts who are driving innovation in exploration technology for use on the Earth and beyond it. As the core developers of ExoSphere, we are at the forefront of several fields all at once – seismology, exploration geology, and machine learning to name a few. We are creative, combining space technology and in-house sensors with computational geophysics and machine learning to unlock geological insight from the subsurface in a way that nobody else has tried before. And we are bold, applying this technology not just on the Earth, but on the surface of other planetary bodies in our solar system. It's not rocket science, but it's close! One must not only bring proven technical expertise, but also be open minded, agile, and adaptable to solve challenges that could very well change our world (and others beyond). We value diversity of perspective, journey, industry experience, skillset, working style, communication preference, and identity; the fact that we come from over 28 nationalities only reinforces our commitment to Inclusion & Diversity.

Core Values

The Core Values at Fleet Space Technologies guide us to our North Star of ambitious, collaborative success - AD ASTRA (“To the Stars!”)

  • Add Value: Obsessively add value for our customers
  • Drive Excellence: Benchmark against the best
  • Agile Action: Take Action. Independent, fast, frugal action
  • Seek Truth: Be curious. Explore
  • Take Responsibility: Make decisions and own them
  • Radical Ideas: We are unique. We do things differently
  • Always Deliver: We always find a way to get it done on time

The Role

Our ambition is to capitalize on our hardware and data processing advantage to build the world’s best vertically integrated platform for ML driven mineral discovery. We want to work with curious and ambitious data-driven geoscientists to realize this groundbreaking work.

Data scientists at Fleet Space Technologies will leverage advanced data analytics, machine learning, and statistical techniques to analyze geological and geophysical data, identify patterns, and generate insights to support mineral exploration activities. This role requires a strong foundation in data science principles and a deep understanding of geosciences to enhance exploration efficiency and success rates. The ideal candidate is excited by both fundamental technical developments and the opportunity to work directly with clients to solve problems.

Location

We are open to global applications, this team currently work remotely across Australian and Canadian timezones. There may be some travel required as part of the role and Fleet Space is headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia.

Main Responsibilities

Data Collection and Management

  • Gather and integrate large volumes of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing data from diverse sources.
  • Work with the data engineering team to ingest data into databases and pipelines, ensuring quality, integrity, and accessibility.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

  • Apply statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms to identify patterns and anomalies in exploration data.
  • Use spatial data analysis techniques to create predictive models for mineral prospectivity.

Machine Learning and Modeling

  • Develop and implement machine learning models to predict the location of mineral deposits.
  • Continuously refine models based on new data and exploration results.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with geologists, geophysicists, and other exploration team members to understand data needs and provide actionable insights.
  • Present findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders through reports, visualizations, and presentations.

Tool Development and Innovation

  • Develop custom software tools and scripts to automate data processing and analysis tasks.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and mineral exploration technologies, and implement innovative solutions.

Key Skills And Experience

  • Experience in the mining or mineral exploration industry
  • Understanding of mineral economics and the exploration lifecycle
  • Proficiency in the Python data science ecosystem (pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, general python fluency)
  • Understanding of the application of geophysical & geological methods for mineral exploration (e.g. potential fields, EM, seismic, geochemistry, structural geology)
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow) is a plus

Qualifications And Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Geosciences, Computer Science, or a related field. A PhD is a plus.
  • 3+ years of experience in data science, preferably within the mineral exploration or natural resources sector.
  • Proven experience with geospatial data analysis.
