Data Engineer (Geospatial)

About the role

They have an opportunity for a highly motivated Data Engineer to join Ordnance Survey’s Data Capture & Engineering team in developing their next generation geospatial data.

Using big data technologies (primarily Databricks, an implementation of Apache Spark) you will develop, support, and maintain automated processes that enrich and transform Ordnance Survey’s large-scale data.

Working in a forward-thinking agile environment, this role will challenge you to develop scalable and reliable solutions to produce high-quality data that will form part of Ordnance Survey’s data products. You will have a logical approach to analysing and interpreting requirements, enabling you to apply your knowledge and solve complex problems to effectively control the capture of geospatial data.

Your team will look to you for technical coaching and mentoring, as you work together to develop and deliver processes that are logical, robust, efficient, performant, maintainable and supportable.

What they're looking for

• Working with complex Geospatial data and a logical approach to problem solving
• Knowledge of data structures and experience querying databases.
• Software engineering – one or more language (such as Scala or Python)
• Track record in developing and delivering production ready components
• Good knowledge of testing approaches and best practice
• Providing technical coaching and mentoring
• Advocating software engineering industry best practice
• Interpreting detailed specifications and translating into simple solutions
• Apache Spark/Databricks experience (desirable)
• Experience of working in Microsoft Azure (desirable)
• Experience of working with the Scala language (desirable)

They have a fantastic HQ in Southampton, Hampshire where you will be required to spend one day a week with the remaining time being a personal choice as to whether you work from home, one of their regional offices or spend more time at OSHQ.

Security

OS conducts DBS background checks for all joiners and some of their roles require additional security clearance, including to SC or DV level in some cases. They will tell candidates at the appropriate time during the recruitment process if additional clearance will be required for this role.
