The Data Engineer is responsible for planning, conducting, validating, and maintaining the design and development phases of data exports and third party data imports. This includes review of solution requirements, development of specifications, database setup, data integration, code development, and production of custom and formatted source extracts. The Data Engineer will be involved in reviewing business requirements to identify the type of information needed, identifying the source systems that contain the data, identifying how to integrate that data into the existing data warehouse and creating documents to convey to a developer what processing and transforming needs to occur to accomplish that integration.


This position reports to the Manager, Data Operations and requires minimal degree of supervision to ensure tasks are appropriately prioritized.


  • Design, update and maintain integration processes using technical focused development to support business unit needs
  • Interact with various information systems personnel to clarify program intent, identify problems and suggest changes
  • Compile and write documentation of program development following established methods so others can understand the program
  • Conduct trial runs of programs utilizing approved testing procedures to be sure they will produce the desired integration results
  • Write or contribute to instructions and manuals following documentation standards to guide end users
  • Revise or expand existing processes to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements
  • Prepare detailed specifications from which programs will be written by conducting appropriate technical research
  • Works with internal departments and clients to develop data export requirements
  • Interprets client requirements, recommends appropriate technical solutions, and documents technical specifications
  • Analyzes clinical database structures and creates processes for source data extractions from all applications
  • Serves as lead on new development of multiple projects and coordinates with other functional team and external resources as needed
  • Creates and reviews documentation of technical specifications, standard operating procedures, and guidelines
  • Provides input into clinical database development standards to gain export efficiencies
  • Analyzes data integration requirements and develop appropriate solutions for processing and importing data from various external sources
  • May design and develop reports
  • All other job related duties as it relates to the job function or as delegated by the management team

  • Experience with data modeling, database design and security, and message queues
  • Knowledge of relational databases and Microsoft Office products
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Experience creating product requirements and driving product development efforts
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical business units


Include minimum education, technical training, and/or experience required to perform the job.

  • 4 year college degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or related area or 3+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
