Lead Storage and Data Engineer

Overview:
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides services that enable Princeton University to achieve its mission to advance learning through scholarship, research, and teaching of unsurpassed quality. The Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) department within the central OIT organization architects, engineers and operates the campus-wide IT infrastructure services that support the University’s research, teaching, and administrative mission.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Storage and Automation, the Lead Storage and Data Engineer has responsibility for architecting and engineering enterprise backup and storage platforms, researching and developing creative forward-thinking solutions to new challenges, and collaborating with a diverse community of staff, students, and faculty to achieve their goals and mission.
Responsibilities:
  • Act as ambassador to the data and storage services for the University's administrative departments by communicating features, changes, and functionality through presentations, demos, and documentation
  • Collaborate with the Research Computing department and the Library to define multi-year roadmaps, architecture, and strategies for campus-wide data and storage services based on current and future University needs and upcoming technologies that may redefine storage and data platforms
  • Lead the design of storage and backup infrastructure standards based on the latest protocols and security standards for enterprise and critical infrastructure
  • Lead the monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of storage and backup operational tasks and issues in collaboration with other technical teams, campus partners, and technology vendors
  • Develop and execute scripts or REST API functions to automate bulk tasks into storage and backup technologies into other IT platforms
  • Lead and guide teams to enable them to develop and execute test and implementation plans for validating changes to new firmware and platform
  • Serve as technical project manager/lead for small- to medium-sized projects
  • Incorporate established change and release management procedures into solution designs
  • Support other enterprise central IT teams with storage infrastructure impacting rollouts and mentor and help develop storage and backup capability and skills of team members
  • Maintain confidential data in the strictest confidence and ensure privacy, security, and proper use in accordance with University Information Security Policy
  • Support backup and storage platforms, currently Dell/EMC Isilon NAS (Central File Service), Cohesity DataProtect (Backup), Veeam Backup & Replication (Backup), and IBM Cloud Object Storage (TigerData)
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:
  • 10 years of experience working in enterprise IT infrastructure managing servers, virtual machines, and storage platforms.
  • 5 or more years of experience designing and architecting enterprise storage and backup infrastructure solutions.
  • Thorough understanding of storage and backup design, specifications, and testing methodologies
  • Proven ability to diagnose and remediate complex server/client connectivity issues
  • Experience coordinating architecture, design, testing and implementation activities for multiple work streams within large scale projects
  • Experience in scripting and automating tasks in Linux, Windows, or other storage native platforms
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of ITIL foundations
  • Experience in a Higher Education setting
  • Experience with Cloud-based architecture
  • Experience with Agile framework
  • Experience in Site Reliability Engineering teams
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work-related experience
