Job Summary

In collaboration between the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Data Analytics, CU Boulder encourages applications for a Data Engineer!

The Data Engineer position exists to provide IT services to the Office of Data Analytics and other campus units through the development, delivery, operation, support, and improvement of data-related services. In doing this, the Data Engineer may elicit customer requirements, analyze business and technical processes, implement solutions, and provide technical support and guidance. This position may also recommend guidelines and standards for new campus applications/services.

The Data Services group manages data, data architecture, and data integrations for the Boulder Campus. We interact with partners across CU Boulder and throughout the CU System. Our goal is to aid CU Boulder’s academic, research, and administrative units through responsible and responsive data management and data integration development.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Data Services Operations
  • Provide computer system and/or application administration and management of one or more Data Services service(s) and integrations.
  • Implement business and/or technical processes related to the delivery of service(s) to customers.
  • Tackle problems involved with the use of software applications and system processes by answering inquiries, explaining the use of applications and processes, resolving and/or referring problems to appropriate persons for resolution, and fielding, formalizing, and monitoring service requests.
Data Integration Development
  • Partner with the Office of Data Analytics team members to understand data needs and to define requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Data Analytics business/technical analysts to define data integration specifications.
  • Using defined requirements and specifications, develop new and/or improve existing data integrations that use data integration patterns, tools, and technologies (APIs, ETL, database management, etc.) established by the Data Services team.
  • Assist partners with data governance processes and practices to ensure data recipients have appropriate training and approvals before receiving data.
System and Process Continuous Improvement
  • Implement changes to business processes, technical processes, system configurations, and other aspects of Data Services’ IT services in order to better meet customer needs, to operate services more efficiently, and to adapt to evolving industry standards and methodologies.
Business and Technical Analysis
  • Provide Data Services domain expertise and data analysis support to the Office of Data Analytics, OIT groups, project teams, and campus partners.
  • Assist the Office of Data Analytics and other groups to help ensure appropriate understanding of data related policies and standards and to help identify appropriate data sources and data elements to meet their needs.
Professional Development and Influence
  • This position will maintain professional expertise by reviewing trade publications, attending seminars, training sessions and conferences.
  • Participate in formal and informal training and professional development to maintain and improve technical and business process expertise, particularly with regard to Data Services technology, processes, and standard methodologies.
  • Disseminate and acquire knowledge on data systems engineering and standard processes regarding delivering services to a university campus by attending and presenting at conferences and seminars, conducting campus wide Tech Talks, engaging in discussions with colleagues at peer institutions.
What You Should Know
  • This position is in a hybrid work situation. The majority of work is being performed remotely. This position may be expected to come on-site for a required in-person OIT, SRS or campus event or other unforeseen circumstances 1-2 times per year.

  • Salary range: $86,000 - $100,000.

What We Require
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field. A combination of education and/or job-related experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • 3+ years experience with data pipelines and/or system integrations.
  • 1+ years of experience:
    • In business analysis, project management, customer service, or a similar customer facing role.
    • With data integration patterns, commonly used file or object formats (XML, JSON, CSV, Avro, feather, or parquet), and ETL tools or platforms.
    • With SQL querying and query troubleshooting.
    • Experience with development in Python, JavaScript, Java, or Scala.
What You Will Need
  • Knowledge of and experience with SQL and relational database management applications such as Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, Redshift, or Snowflake.
  • Analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with team members at various levels, including the highest leadership.
  • Demonstrable ability to quickly learn new technologies and new processes.
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, particularly strong customer skills interacting with key collaborators.
  • Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience collaborating with source or version control using Git-based systems, especially GitHub.
  • Experience with ODBC/JDBC or Arrow Flight connections to work with data.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience working with Oracle databases.
  • Experience working in partnership with analytics or data science teams.
  • Testing and QA experience, particularly with regard to data quality, using a variety of testing tools and methods.
  • Basic understanding of Linux shell commands, web application architectures, IP networks, and version control.
  • Experience integrating on premise systems with SaaS solutions.
  • Experience delivering IT solutions in a higher-education environment, preferably at a large research university.
  • Experience working independently toward project and team goals.
  • Experience in multiplying the efforts of a team or organization using data.
  • Experience with Python or R dataframe manipulation.
  • Experience with data analysis using Pandas DataFrame.
  • Experience with scaled or distributed data processing technologies such as Spark or Dask.
  • Experience with orchestration tools such as Prefect, Airflow, Dagster, or similar.
  • Experience with object storage tools such as S3, MinIO, or similar.
  • Experience with event streaming technologies such as Kafka or similar.
  • Experience with data catalog tools such as Collibra, Data Cookbook, Data.World, or similar.
  • Experience with containerized application builds and implementation.
  • Experience in continuous integration, continuous delivery, and DevOps systems.
  • Experience with modern data stack tools (Snowflake, Google Big Query, Fivetran, Matillion, Airbyte, Looker, ThoughtSpot, etc.).
