The Senior Data Scientist Role

As a Senior Data Scientist at Persefoni you will be a key member of the Data Engineering Department enabling our customers to achieve their GHG emissions objectives with data-driven insights. You have the skills to gather, transform, and analyze data from a variety of sources and with a variety structures. You’re able to apply analytical algorithms to solve a business problem, but you know that a deep understanding of the data and its origins is just as important. You’re able to apply validation and testing techniques to ensure that analytical results are accurate and trustworthy for decision-makers.

As a Data Scientist, you will partner with a cross-functional team including data engineers, front-end engineers, designers, product managers, and customer success engineers to deliver features at a rapid pace. Successful candidates should have strong software engineering skills, have a minimum of three years of recent professional programming in positions requiring the skills listed below with a preference for Python, Golang, and/or SQL development. Our backend stack is a combination of Golang, Redis, and MySQL while following the Clean Architecture Design pattern. APIs are documented and managed using the Open API framework and maintained in SwaggerHub. Our data pipelines are mainly managed via Databricks within AWS cloud services. All development work is managed via JIRA tracked sprints and Bitbucket Git-flow branch management.


This is a fast-paced startup environment, so our team needs to be flexible, wear many hats, and partner effectively. You may find yourself:

  • Enriching raw data to enable analytical insights internally and for customers
  • Sourcing and evaluating third-party data and analytics and develop integration requirements for
  • Performing ad-hoc analysis to address customer needs and inform Persefoni strategy and priorities
  • Developing, validating, and deploying Machine Learning capabilities, both internal and customer-facing
  • Evaluating methodological documentation for environmental emissions factors to determine if they are suitable for a use case
  • Collaborating on the design of data models, technical architecture, data flows, schemas and API contracts
  • Developing tools to ensure integrity of internal and customer data in the platform or streamline the customer’s data integration experience
  • Tracking your work through the software development lifecycle in Jira, push well-documented pull requests for features, and collaborate through review and comments on your fellow developer pull requests

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years of experience in data analytics, or Master’s Degree plus 2 years of experience in data analytics, or PhD in data analytics
  • Proficiency in automated testing
  • At least 2 years experience with machine learning or predictive modeling.
  • At least 2 years experience with data retrieval and transformation using relational databases

Ideal Qualifications

We expect any candidate will have a million things they need to learn about this fast-moving space, but prior experience in any of the following areas will give you an awesome head start:

  • Environmental Science and/or Economics background
  • Strong practitioner of reproducible analysis
  • Expertise in automated testing
  • Experienced in structured data extraction from unstructured documents
  • Experience with data pipeline development in Databricks
  • Proficiency with creating structs, struct methods and interfaces in Go
