The purpose of a Data Engineer role is to design, develop, and maintain the systems and infrastructure necessary for acquiring, storing, processing, and transforming large volumes of data. Data engineers play a critical role in enabling organizations to effectively manage and leverage their data assets for analytics, reporting, and decision-making purposes. They work closely with data architects, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into scalable and efficient data solutions.
The Team:
- The Technology team is part of Challenger’s Operations and Technology division.
- The Technology Team includes the following domain teams: Digital, Sales & Marketing, Banking, Corporate, Registry, Investment Services and Risk and Asset Management.
- These teams are supported by Architecture & Strategy, Infrastructure, Risk and Security and the Project Office.
This person will be responsible for:
- As a Data Engineer, you will collaborate with Data Architects, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to align our systems with Enterprise and Data Architecture standards and patterns.
- You will leverage your expertise in MS SQL, T-SQL, SSAS, PowerBI, Informatica, SSIS, c#, .Net, Python, R, and other relevant technologies to drive the success of our data projects.
- This role requires strong technical skills, leadership abilities, and a deep understanding of Agile scrum methodology.
Role Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Product Owners and Data Architects to understand business requirements and translate them into technical data solutions.
- Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) / ELT processes, and data integration workflows using MS SQL, T-SQL, SSIS, and Informatica.
- Develop data models, data schemas, and database designs to support efficient and scalable data storage and retrieval.
- Implement and optimize data processing and transformation routines to ensure data quality, accuracy, and integrity.
- Utilize SSAS to design, develop, and maintain OLAP cubes, multidimensional models, and data mining structures.
- Create and maintain data visualizations, reports, and dashboards using Power BI to provide actionable insights to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify data requirements and implement data solutions that align with enterprise and data architecture standards and patterns.
- Work in an Agile Scrum environment, participating in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and sprint reviews.
- Perform data analysis and profiling to identify data quality issues, anomalies, and trends.
- Write and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and functions to support data retrieval and analysis.
- Develop and maintain data documentation, including data dictionaries, data flow diagrams, and technical specifications.
- Stay up to date with the latest tools, technologies, and best practices in data engineering and analytics.
- Play a key role in supporting the data platform by monitoring its performance, identifying and resolving issues, and ensuring its overall reliability and availability. This includes managing data pipelines, configuring data storage systems, and optimizing data processing workflows.
- Managing and resolving data-related issues reported by stakeholders. This involves analyzing problem areas, troubleshooting root causes, and implementing appropriate solutions. Pu tin place preventive measures to mitigate future issues.
- Document data engineering processes, systems, and workflows to ensure knowledge sharing and maintain a centralized knowledge base.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders, providing regular updates on progress, issue resolution, and system enhancements.
Experience required:
- A minimum of 2+ years’ experience as a Data Engineer (Essential)
- Proficiency in SQL, data modelling, ETL /ELT tools (e.g., SSIS, Informatica), and database management systems (e.g., MS SQL Server) (Essential)
- Proficient in Snowflake warehouse technology
- Experience with data modelling, Automation, CI/CD
- Programming skills in languages like Python, C#, or Scala (Essential)
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C#) (Essential)
- Understanding of data warehousing concepts and methodologies (Essential)
- Experience with designing and implementing data warehouses (Essential)
- Familiarity with BI tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, or QlikView
- Experience in creating reports, dashboards, and visualizations
- Knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)/ELT processes and tools
- Experience with integrating data from various sources into a centralized repository
- Understanding of data quality principles and best practices
- Proficiency in data analysis techniques and tools
- Excellent understanding of systems development within a formal Software Development Life Cycle methodology including sound experience in the Scrum agile framework (Essential)
- Financial industry experience
Certifications/Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree in Computer Science
- Engineering or related degree or equivalent (Nice to have)
