The UCSF Department of Pediatrics seeks a proven Business Intelligence Analyst to support its goals of improving information integration and sharing across multiple databases and to effectively use business analytics, data warehousing tools, and techniques to manage costs and improve operations in critical areas of the organization.
The analyst will provide detailed reporting and analysis of department clinical operations down to the faculty level, monthly oversight reports to department leadership, and data analysis for business operations and quality improvement projects. Analyzes data to support decision-making around investing in new research and clinical programs. Uses experience, knowledge, and understanding of financial data, clinical and claims data, and systems to improve the department’s clinical revenue margin.
The analyst will use various data sources, including the Clarity database and UCSF data warehouses, in the development and production of dashboards and other analytic reports that support business decision-making. In addition, the analyst will assist in establishing best practice approaches for data analysis in the department's business units, support a broad range of department constituents in documenting workflows, processes, and the like, and prepare process manuals and training materials.
Department Description
The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine. The department ranks 19th in the nation among Pediatrics departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health. The department is comprised of 18 divisions, with clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $75 million and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $34 million. The department employs physicians who work at hospitals throughout the Bay Area, including Benioff Children’s Hospital-Oakland, Washington Hospital, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Natividad Medical Center, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Minimum 3 years of related experience
- Clarity Data Model certification
- SQL proficiency
- Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards, and best practices
- Thorough knowledge of relevant internal databases, BI applications, and tools. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems and develop effective solutions
- Proven ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with UCSF data warehouses
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to manage time and organize competing priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff
