Data Engineering at Rover:

Data powers everything at Rover. We are a small team that works closely with all parts of the organization to ensure that the data available to the business is fresh and accurate, our application databases are healthy, and our reporting infrastructure meets the needs of everyone from analysts to the C-suite. We love fine-tuning our databases, breathe observability, and enjoy building self-serve tools that reduce time to insights for our users!
Do you want to help modernize our Data Platform by contributing to our ETL tooling? Perhaps you're passionate about the customer, and want to build tooling that makes machine learning model development a breeze. We own all things data-related at Rover, from the application databases to analytics infrastructure, which means you'll get the chance to work on exciting and impactful projects and learn a ton along the way.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide the strategic vision for crafting the future of Rover's data infrastructure
    • Lead cross team data projects to ensure our pipelines are reliable, efficient, and testable
    • Communicate efficiently across team boundaries to establish overarching data architecture, and provide guidance to individual teams
    • Design, develop, and test high-performance batch and stream data processing systems and tools
    • Mentor other Engineers to help develop and grow their technical skills
    • Build self-service tools that empower our engineers, data scientists, and analysts to quickly get key business insights

REQUIRED SKILLS:

    • 8+ years of data engineering experience
    • Expertise in Python and SQL with a passion for writing high-quality code
    • Experience designing and deploying highly performant batch and streaming data systems with reliable monitoring and logging practices
    • Proven track record of exercising data engineering best practices around data governance, retention, automated testing, monitoring, and logging
    • Experience with & enthusiasm for mentoring teammates, providing technical feedback, and sharing knowledge with others
    • Background in administrating highly available application databases at scale
    • Exceptional at understanding business needs to help prioritize and inform our teams roadmap

NICE TO HAVE:

    • Experience implementing highly available multi-region database solutions at scale
    • You deeply understand data access patterns, streaming technology, data validation, data modeling, data performance, and cost optimization
    • Experience administrating and building tooling for streaming data pipelines using Kafka
    • Expertise with a majority of our tech stack: Python, Redshift, MySQL, Postgres, Kafka, Spark, EMR, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
