Job Description

The Computational Biology Team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a chemistry- or biomolecule-focused data scientist to join our team. Expertise in mass spectrometry data analysis, use of deep learning, statistics, model fitting, cheminformatics, chemical property prediction, data management, software development, and working in multidisciplinary teams are highly relevant.

The Data Scientist will contribute to diverse fundamental science research programs studying small molecule identification for human health, environmental, and chemical forensics problems as well as advancing small molecule identification methods through software development and scripting. The candidate will be responsible for data analysis from various high-throughput ‘omics platforms, including DNA/RNA sequence data, proteomics and metabolomics. The position involves technical work with complex data from ongoing studies, focusing on application of methods for data integration, and machine learning. The incumbent will define and carry out the application of existing methodologies and original research in machine learning and data science largely focused in the area of metabolomics and exposomics technologies, however the candidate should have a breadth of skills to work on diverse biological and chemical data types. In addition to technical research, this position expects participation and career development in task management, proposal writing, business development, and publishing.

The ideal candidate should have a strong fundamental chemistry and computer science background with significant computing experience and experience in processing and analysis of high-throughput data. The candidate should have excellent communication skills with a demonstrated capability to perform multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. The candidate should also have an interest in applying new approaches and knowledge to science problems associated with human health, environmental ecology, and molecular design. They should be highly proficient in at least one programming language (Python, e.g.) and have experience in software development practices (version control, unit testing, etc.). The ideal candidate will have written first-author publications (not required to be published and through peer review yet).

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience or MS/MA with 0 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in chemistry, cheminformatics, bioinformatics, or a closely related field.

  • MS with a focus on data science, engineering, computer science, chemistry, or a closely related field.

  • Significant experience with software development tools (GitHub) and Python development experience.
