We apply predictive technology to large volumes of data to solve a wide spectrum of problems. Stantec Digital Solutions works together with internal & external customers to address their business needs using AI solutions.

The Digital Solutions Data Scientist team member will help derive business value through the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The position calls for using massive amounts of disparate data to develop ML models that represent physical and natural systems. This is the position for you if you’re eager to apply ML to a diverse array of enterprise Architectural, Environmental, Engineering, and Physical Sciences use cases.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Assist customers by being able to deliver a ML project from beginning to end, including understanding the business need, aggregating data, exploring data, building & validating predictive models, aiding in ML Ops, and deploying completed models with concept-drift monitoring and retraining to deliver business impact to the organization
• Rapidly exploring new datasets to visually communicate data insights that form the basis for deriving ML based models
• Use Azure Services (e.g., Synapse, Databricks), ML platforms, and frameworks (e.g., MXNet, TensorFlow, PyTorch, SparkML, scikit-learn) to help our customers build ML models
• Research and implement novel ML approaches, including hardware optimizations on platforms, as well as explaining and justifying the selected approaches
• Work with other Digital Solutions Intrapreneurs (Applications Development, IoT, Digital Twin, AEC Engineering) to analyze, extract, normalize, and label relevant data, and with our Professional Services engineers to operationalize customers models after they are prototyped
• Refine Stantec’s Data Development Operations (SD2O) process including business requirements, user stories & design specifications & data orchestration for the Data Science & development teams to deliver upon & record the system

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Experience with ML fields, e.g., natural language processing, computer vision, statistical learning theory
• 0-5 years of industry experience in predictive modeling, data science, and analysis
• Experience in an ML engineer or data scientist role building ML models
• Experience writing code in Python, R, Scala with documentation for reproducibility
• Java, C , Rust, and Docker experience is a plus
• Experience with scripting in (Python, R, etc.) in rapidly exploring new terabyte size datasets and diving into data to discover hidden patterns, as well as experience in communicating insights using data visualization tools and Jupyter notebooks
• Experience with code version control using Git

Preferred Qualifications include:

• Experience writing and speaking about technical concepts to business, technical, and lay audiences and giving data-driven presentations
• Experience in writing SQL, and working with GPUs to develop models
• Ability to develop strategic, baselined, data modeling processes; ability to accurately determine cause-and-effect relationships
• Demonstrable track record of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering results in a dynamic environment

Education and Experience

• Background and/or post-secondary education in math, physics or engineering (e.g., civil, environmental, water resources, mechanical engineering, etc.) with a focus on quantitative problem-solving through computational tools.
• Prefer additional education or equivalent professional or military experience in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Statistics, Mathematics, etc.)

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
