Organizational Setting

The FAO’s Food and Nutrition Division (ESN) assists Members to improve diets and raise levels of nutrition and provides support with appropriate policies, strategies and methodologies for improving the efficiency and inclusiveness of their agriculture and food systems. As a knowledge leader, areas addressed include dietary assessment, support on nutrition-sensitive food and agriculture policies and programmes, effective nutrition promotion programmes, food value chains, market linkages, post-harvest handling, food loss and waste reduction and nutrition-sensitive agro-processing. FAO is committed to support Members in their efforts to improve nutritional outcomes as stated in the Rome Declaration on Nutrition (November 2014) and to mainstream nutrition across all of the work of the Organization.

FAO International Consultants and Call Purpose

The Vision and Strategy for FAOs Work in Nutrition describes five action areas for implementing FAOs mission in nutrition to address all forms of malnutrition through accelerating impactful policies and actions to enable healthy diets for all. As part of FAOs mandate as a normative work agencies, the first action area is on data and the second on evidence. The implementation of the action areas of the FAOs work in nutrition requires an agrifood system approach to addressing all forms of malnutrition. There are currently large gaps in the global evidence base and knowledge on how different stresses and entry points for impact across agrifood systems re related to nutrient availability for human consumption. One example is how the reduction of food loss and waste for the increased availability, accessibility, and affordability of healthy diets.

The objective of the Call of Interest is to identify skilled professionals to support various activities focused on data analyses to support increasing the evidence base and knowledge on agrifood systems approaches and their impact on diets and nutrition.

Reporting Lines

The Consultant will work under the overall guidance of the Director of ESN and the direct supervision of the Deputy Director or a senior Nutrition Officer.

Technical Focus

To provide data, information, knowledge and skills to analyse, interpret, and provide advice on the development, refinement, and finalization of updated methods for analysis of nutrition-related data, and use these methods to expand the evidence base and knowledge, for example, estimating nutrient losses resulting from food loss and waste, validation of dietary intake assessments, and calculation of usual dietary intakes. This work will include providing support to the development of methodologies as well as implementation of analytical activities. Other activities include contributing to the drafting of reports through provision of nutrition technical input to documents. The consultant will also provide technical expertise for meetings, briefs, speeches, and similar deliverables.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Review and critically analyse statistical methodologies for nutrition, for example calculating nutrient loss and waste and nutritional impact of food loss and waste, calculating usual intakes based on dietary data
  • Support organizing and conducting consultations with external and internal experts for consultative agreement on strengths and limitations of methodologies for nutrition, for example calculating nutrient loss and waste and nutritional impact of food loss and waste, validation of approaches for the Minimum Dietary Diversity Score for Women (MDD-W), calculation of usual dietary intakes.
  • Support the development of innovative methodologies for dietary-related analyses such as tracking nutrient losses from food loss and waste globally or analysing dietary intake data from diverse sources.
  • Analyze nutrition and dietary-related data at national level.
  • Analyze nutritional impact of stresses on the agrifood systems such as food loss and waste or disaster and climate change including linking to prevalence of nutrient inadequacy and potential availability of nutrients for addressing these inadequacies.
  • Develop capacity within ESN and in FAO regional and country offices to analyse and interpret nutrition data, for example on nutrient loss and waste, and MDD-W.
  • Provide technical analytical input to documents focusing on nutrition data, for example nutrient loss and waste, and the relationship between food loss and waste and nutrition outcomes, or validation methodologies and results for MDD-W.
  • Provide technical review for analytical components to various documents particularly on nutrition data, for example nutrient loss and waste, and the relationship between food loss and waste and nutrition outcomes.
  • Publish peer reviewed and other technical publications for dissemination of methodologies and results.
  • Support the FAO and ESN in consultations and meetings by providing data, information and knowledge and expertise on nutrition and dietary related analyses.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University degree (only for Consultants) in public health, natural sciences, nutrition, biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology or similar. Degree in human nutrition is an asset.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in data analytics, dietary data analysis, statistics, biostatics, nutritional epidemiology or similar.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of another of the UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) are required for COF. For PSA only working knowledge of English is required.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Extent and relevance of experience in data analysis or biostatistics;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in nutritional epidemiology or nutrition;
  • Work experience in liaison and communication amongst diverse experts;
  • Experience in preparation and providing support to events such as trainings, consultations, meetings;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in development of analytical methodologies;
  • Strong written communication skills with demonstrable success in publication;
  • Work experience in dietary data analysis, such as MDD-W validation;
  • Work experience in food loss and waste or nutrient loss and waste analyses an asset;
  • Previous working experience in international organizations is an asset.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates expertise and experience in data analytics for diets and nutrition;
  • Experience in successful publication of work in high impact peer reviewed journals (among other publication types);
  • Demonstrates skills and experience in supporting effective collaboration with partners, research institutions, and experts etc. for consensus building;
  • Extent and relevance of knowledge and experience in the field of nutrition and dietary data analysis, in particular food or nutrient loss and/or waste and dietary data;
  • Extent and relevance of experience in communicating positions, results, and outcomes of work;
