Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) provides field epidemiology support to the Health Protection Division of Public Health Wales. It assists the Division in protecting the population of Wales from infectious diseases and environmental hazards through public health surveillance, epidemiological support for field investigation, and applied research.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within CDSC for a senior data scientist. This is a senior role that will develop the use of data science techniques to support the work of CDSC, with a focus on statistical methods.
You will take a lead role in applying the use of data science techniques, such as data linkage, and machine learning, and also have a good understanding and practical experience of applying statistical methods. These skills will be applied to develop public health surveillance the understanding of infectious disease epidemiology in Wales. The post holder will develop new tools, methods and processes to maintain and improve existing surveillance systems, as well as supporting epidemiologists in setting up new surveillance systems. The post holder will also work closely with other relevant colleagues to develop new surveillance methods using a variety of new datasets, including very large datasets, and develop new ways working and presenting the data. This post provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to make a difference to the health of the population of Wales.
You will already be an experienced data scientist with excellent technical skills that you can readily adapt to help solve complex public health problems. You will have good communication skills and be keen to deliver training in your area of expertise. You will also be keen to work with epidemiologists in better understanding the epidemiology of infectious diseases in Wales.
Your base will be within a Public Health Wales office site, subject to discussion.
