NATURE AND SCOPE:

Research & Analytics is a multidisciplinary team that is focused on connecting and improving school quality and learner environments to impact student, educator, and institutional outcomes through reliable and valid measurement and actionable reporting, supported by empirical research. As a member of this team, the Data Analyst will focus on generating data-driven insights to support strategic activities, lines of business, and empower staff to act through the use of data and visualizations.

The Data Analyst will serve as a subject-matter expert for visualization, contribute to evolving data management processes, and provide consulting and technical assistance to cross-functional partners, senior leadership, and education partners. Working with large data sets resulting from business processes as well as Cognia surveys, assessments, and services, the Data Analyst will employ statistical methods, database infrastructure, and visualization tools to tell stories about school improvement, learning environments, and student outcomes.

As a member of the Research & Analytics team, the Data Analyst will bring an entrepreneurial mentality, understanding that successfully untangling large, complex datasets requires collaboration and creative solutions. Under the supervision of the Manager, Analytics, this role will work closely with like-minded education researchers, Product Management, Global Services, Marketing, Finance, and Database Engineering.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

• Contribute to analytic and visualization efforts for Cognia’s survey, assessment, and other operational data.
• Execute the design, development, and maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, dashboards, etc. to drive key business decisions.
• Translate general reporting requests from the business into data requirements, acquire data from varied sources, and develop reports to satisfy the immediate business need, with a strategic focus on anticipating future needs.
• Work with internal groups to translate data-informed business questions into coded and reproducible analyses and communicate results in a concise and persuasive manner.
• Develop business requirements and process documentation for ad-hoc, on demand, and standard reports.
• Build dashboards to measure, track and interpret key company metrics, and identify patterns and trends.
• Leverage sufficient understanding of the business and strategy to provide data-based recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership.
• Work with database engineering to ensure that key data points are captured, stored, and structured so that our team can leverage them for reporting and analytic capabilities.
• Collaborate within a team environment to develop relevant and repeatable policies and procedures for conducting analyses, building reports and visualizations.
• Stay abreast of the analytics and visualization fields to recommend new tools or processes that would help us scale in the future.
• Perform duties and fulfill responsibilities that may, from time to time, include related or unrelated tasks.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

• Bachelors’ degree in Applied Statistics/Mathematics, Analytics, Computer Science, or social-science background with a focus on quantitative analysis required; Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in designing reports, visualizations, and dashboards using Tableau (or similar tools) and a minimum of one (1) year of professional experience writing complex queries using Microsoft SQL Server required
• Demonstrated understanding and experience with descriptive and inferential statistics in a business environment required
• Understanding of principles and practices of educational research methodology, survey development, and experimental design preferred
• Experience in K-12 education preferred
• Expertise with statistical analysis software (e.g., R, Python) preferred
