Position Specific Description

We are looking for a Staff Data Scientist to support development of ZEVi, our energy-management system, which enables electric vehicle fleets to scale and optimize their charging operations with ease. The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of key modeling techniques, software modules, data integrations, and visualizations for our fleet-centric smart-charging system, and occasionally support our two advisory software products (EValuate and rEVeal). In this role, your work will directly contribute to the electrification and decarbonization of some of the largest vehicle fleets in North America.

As a Staff Data Scientist at NextEra Mobility, you will:
  • Design, build, and maintain distributed software and data systems
  • Generate data-driven insights and translate them into strategic product enhancements
  • Apply optimization, machine learning, and other modeling techniques to deliver new functionality
  • Write production-level code in Python
  • Review colleagues’ work before it goes into production, ensuring quality, maintainability, and conformance with best practices
  • Communicate model designs and analysis findings to multiple stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation
  • Contribute to a positive team dynamic across human and technical domains
  • Use (and grow!) your knowledge of statistics, optimization, control systems, data analysis, machine learning, data engineering, software engineering, and software development
  • Enjoy working closely with a team of cheerful, hardworking, mission-driven colleagues that practice bi-directional teaching and learning
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a highly quantitative field
  • 2+ years (4+ for Senior-level) experience working with large, complex datasets, and/or building and deploying at least one of the following for real-time systems:
    • Machine learning algorithms, applied to time-series datasets
    • Convex and non-convex optimization techniques
    • Model predictive control systems
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to understand both the details of the problem, as well as the big picture business contribution & impact
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to occasionally work within tight timelines, balance multiple projects, and/or adapt to dynamic objectives
  • Position level will be based on experience and qualifications

  • Experience solving complex problems such as transportation routing, HVAC control, or grid-integration challenges
  • Experience with any of the following:
    • Mobility space
    • Clean energy

Job Overview

This position is responsible for leading the development of algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., “Big Data”).
