Salary: $112,569.60 - $140,712.00 annually

Status: Temporary Full Time (12 months)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Machine Learning Engineer with a specialized focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) to join the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre AI Team at UHN. This position will play a crucial role in leveraging AI to enhance healthcare delivery across our network by focusing on the implementation of NLP projects using EMR data. The successful candidate will work closely with care providers, researchers, and technical teams to develop and deploy AI-driven solutions that improve clinical decision-making and operational efficiencies.

Duties

  • Develop and implement state-of-the-art NLP techniques to analyze and interpret complex EMR data.
  • Lead the architecture, development, and optimization of NLP functionalities for integration into hospital systems across various departments.
  • Drive the adoption and application of foundation models in healthcare settings, tailoring them to specific clinical and administrative needs.
  • Design, build, test, and validate robust ML models to ensure their efficacy and accuracy in real-world clinical environments.
  • Spearhead the deployment of AI solutions in live clinical settings, overseeing the full lifecycle from concept to implementation.
  • Act as a key technical lead in interdisciplinary teams, ensuring clear communication and collaboration between clinicians, IT staff, and researchers.
  • Contribute to grant writing and the acquisition of funding for NLP-based projects.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior ML specialists and interns.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in AI, particularly in NLP and foundation models, sharing insights and best practices with the team.
  • Work on multiple concurrent projects, effectively managing timelines and deliverables while fostering cross-functional collaboration.


Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required; PhD preferred in a field relevant to Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or related disciplines.
  • Minimum of 5 years of extensive experience in NLP, with a strong emphasis on applying ML in healthcare.
  • Proficient in Python and NLP frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, spaCy, NLTK).
  • Demonstrated experience with foundation models and their applications in real-world settings.
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven track record of implementing and validating ML models.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience with the complexities of EMR data and the regulatory landscape of healthcare data privacy.
