JOB TITLE: Crime Intelligence Data Engineer

REPORTS TO: Senior Crime Intelligence Analyst and Director of Information Technology

COMPENSATION: $45,000 to $60,000 annually; commensurate with experience

POSITION PROFILE:

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office (SCDAO) is seeking a Crime Intelligence Data Engineer with a computer science or similar background to participate in the collection, collation, analysis, evaluation, and dissemination of crime data. The Data Engineer plays a critical role in managing, monitoring, and maintaining several sensitive data repositories, including SCDAO’s case management platform (Damion), which is used to create the actionable intelligence for the Office. This includes being responsible for making requested changes, updates and modifications to database structure and data.

The Data Engineer will work as part of a team of intelligence analysts to work alongside prosecutors, technical investigators, and support staff across the Office to improve public safety outcomes by providing prosecutors with actionable data and intelligence to support driving case prioritization, augmentation and expansion, diversion opportunities, and ultimately dispositional decision making.

The Data Engineer will dual report to the Senior Crime Intelligence Analyst within the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) and to the Director of Information Technology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identify, collect, clean, and consolidate sources of partner agency data.
  • Assist in optimizing database security.
  • Maintain database standards.
  • Manage database access.
  • Performance tuning of database systems.
  • Install, upgrade, and manage database applications.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot database errors.
  • Create and manage database reports, visualizations, and dashboards.
  • Create automation for repeating database tasks.
  • Assist with responses to data pursuant to requests made under the state’s public records laws.
  • Audit and improve data collection.
  • Create and maintain case tracking forms and compliance.
  • Provide end user support.
  • Ensure the Intelligence and Data collected by SCDAO is secure, segmented, auditable, and compliant with all regulations, legal requirements, and internal Policy and Procedure.
  • Assist in maintaining a hybrid model which balances intelligence collection and dissemination with the needs of criminal prosecution.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Attend trainings and events relevant to SCDAO functions.
  • Become familiar with, and follow, SCDAO personnel policies, particularly with regard to confidentiality, sexual harassment, drug-free workplace, and usage of information technology resources.
  • Become familiar with, and model, the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Exercise respectful and professional behavior and communication with the public, judicial and law enforcement personnel, and office staff.
  • Liaise with law enforcement and community partners.
  • Complete work assignments in a timely, accurate and efficient manner.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

TRAVEL: Some travel from various sites, including but not limited to, courthouse, law enforcement offices, and community partner’s offices.

Qualifications


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Strong command of SQL, or Oracle Database.
  • Experience with Tableau, or other data visualization software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Impeccable analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Linux and Windows Server environments.
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure).
  • PowerShell, Bash, or Python scripting skills.
  • Familiarity with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS.
  • Experience working in Suffolk County courts or criminal justice agencies.
  • A willingness to engage and develop working relationships with community groups.
