Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division is looking for an Associate Data Scientist to join their Building Technology Group!
In this role, you will assist with writing codes to perform data analytics, including analyzing and cleaning data. You will perform basic energy modeling, maintain databases and open-source code, and perform data analysis. You will work with data from energy meters, HVAC and lighting automation systems, other building sensors, PV systems, batteries, microgrids, and grid signals. Additionally, you will assist with writing specifications, reports, and journal papers related to these activities.
What You Will Do:
- Develop data-processing methods to assess the quality of the data, and to perform error correction and mitigation.
- Assist with developing statistical models of the data to conduct different analyses (measurement and verification, forecasts, data fusion, control algorithms).
- Contribute and maintain an existing open-source codebase.
- Write code to build data-driven energy models for commercial buildings.
- Provide data-related assistance to scientists, engineers, and stakeholders to conduct research in microgrids, building controls and analytics, equipment energy efficiency, and demand response.
- Analyze data and make sure the data is well maintained in a database developed in collaboration with other project staff.
- Assist with writing specifications, reports, and journal papers.
What is Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related data-intensive field and a minimum of 1 year of related work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong experience with data manipulation, processing in Python-Pandas, and other Python packages (sci-kit learn, matplotlib, tensorflow).
- Understanding of Machine Learning tools applied to regression and baselining.
- Demonstrated experience with software versioning tools (git), time-series databases, and rest APIs.
- Knowledge of building energy efficiency, grid-integrated energy-efficient buildings (GEB), and microgrids
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
What We Prefer:
- Experience with research projects and developments in topics related to energy efficiency, semantic modeling, and microgrids.
- Research experience in sustainability, energy efficiency, environmental technology fields.
- Knowledge of demand response (especially in California).
- Knowledge of microservice architectures.
- Experience with IoT devices and related software.
- Experience in writing academic papers or reports.
