Position Summary
The Consortium Data Scientist is responsible for developing and managing biomedical data science research projects, including holding senior leadership roles on those projects. This position will provide data science expertise and technical leadership skills to multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional consortia in which RENCI participates. This position will be responsible for understanding the scientific needs of biomedical consortia and interacting with RENCI technical teams to deliver relevant solutions for these consortia. This position will collaborate extensively with internal and external stakeholders, fostering the implementation of the best practices of team science approaches to collaborative projects. This position is expected to develop research proposals to federal agencies, foundations, and state and local governments that support research at the convergence of domain sciences and data science, as well as publishing technical and scientific articles.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; or a
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming or closely related area; or an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Journey level requires an additional one year of education or experience.
  • Advanced level requires an additional two years of education or experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Ability to understand the architecture of the data ingest and analysis platforms and/or systems
  • Ability to oversee and manage large multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, and multi-institutional research projects.
  • Skill in Data Analytics, including Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse partners, and to communicate technical/scientific concepts to non-technical/non-scientific audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentations to diverse constituencies, strong interpersonal communication, and human relations abilities.
  • Ability to write proposals and publications.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Ph.D. in computer science, life science, data science, or a related field.
  • Experience running scrum meetings and familiarity with agile software development practices.
  • Experience with user-centered design
  • Familiarity with data curation and data sharing processes and policies.
  • Experience with metadata standards for scientific data.
  • Expertise with programming in a language such as python or R.
  • Ability to develop training/tutorial/webinar content
  • Familiarity with NIH awards
