Lead Data Scientist
HMH is creating a new team focused on improving customer outcomes with experimentation, measurement and learning analytics which will drive outsized impact to HMH’s double bottom line of revenue and customer delight. We intend to develop systems to automate and optimize the efficacy of teaching and learning products, iterate on methods for measuring student performance, and apply machine learning at scale for thousands of schools worldwide. We will deliver through the full data product life cycle including analyzing, prototyping, production coding, testing, measuring and then iterating.
As a Lead Data Scientist in the Data Science and Learning Analytics Team, the emphasis on your work will be on Decision Science, exploring complex questions related to student learning and user engagement. You will be comfortable and excited to work closely with the engineering and learning sciences teams to tackle complex business problems that can be solved using data science. You will develop models from unique and diverse data sources to provide strong insights and maximize the impact of the intended outcomes of our company efforts. With a strong business acumen, this role will require you to partner with different business functions to exercise knowledge of statistical techniques and machine learning to develop strategic insights to drive learning goals.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and own data science projects from conception to delivery
- Research and develop statistical or machine learning models that extract timely insights from massive learning datasets
- Work with stakeholders to translate business problems into tractable questions and formal hypotheses that can be modeled using data science techniques
- Develop reproducible data science tools and processes
- Understand the K12 teaching and learning domain and know how to model it
- Communicate concisely and persuasively with product development teams, engineers, and business leaders
- Help identify ways to improve data quality and deliver value
The Lead Data Scientist will have:
- A Master’s or PhD in a quantitative discipline
- 5+ years of professional industry experience in Data Science or Learning Analytics
- Experience delivering impactful data science projects from start to finish
- Expertise in SQL and either Python or R
- Experience writing clean, maintainable, and tested code
- A strong understanding of statistics
- Experience working with Big Data using cloud tools
- The ability to work independently or as a part of a large, cross-functional team.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to explain concepts, write and present results to both technical and non-technical audiences
Top candidates will have strengths in some of the following areas:
- Experience with multi-level models, graph models or recommendation systems
- Production experience with machine learning and other advanced statistical methods
- Experience driving statistical or ML solutions for product development teams
