More About The Graduate Data Scientist Role At PlayHQ
We are growing fast, and are looking for a Melbourne-based Graduate Data Scientist to join our team. The role will report to the Data Science Lead and collaborate with colleagues from across the PlayHQ business, including Product, Engineering, Finance and Community. Your primary responsibility will be to support in the development of data products that enable both internal and external stakeholders β on any given day, you might be:
- Refactoring a model on our first party data platform, using dbt, Snowflake, Tableau or Fivetran
- Analysing user behaviour to help our Product team determine whether a new feature release was successful
- Running some SQL queries for the Finance team to calculate an invoice
- Throwing together a quick Python script that polls data from a third-party website
- Defining success metrics with our Community team and building dashboards to track these over time
- Working with our Engineering team to design a data pipeline from a new service into our data platform
- Running regressions and writing up analyses over participant churn and retention to inform our longer-term product strategy
What We Are Looking For, In Technical Skills
- Experience with data querying languages (e.g. SQL), programming languages (e.g. Python, Golang), and/or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R)
- Good understanding of the principles of data analysis, including exploratory data analysis, data cleaning and transformation, visualisation and transformation
- Knowledge of key statistical concepts (e.g. regressions, A/B tests, clustering, probability) and how they can be applied to business problems
- Basic knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms
- Some familiarity with cloud-based technologies, infrastructure and databases
About You
- You love working with data and everything that entails: staring at spreadsheets, obsessing over small details, backing out explanations from observations of complex systems
- You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and love tackling difficult problems from first principles
- You communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, and are diligent in closing the loop
- You are effective at time management and are comfortable multitasking and delivering to schedules
- You believe in our mission and the importance of community sport
- You are comfortable working under conditions of uncertainty β we are still a startup at heart so we move quickly and are driven by outcomes, not processes
- You are in your final year or have completed a degree in engineering, data science, or computer science, or an equivalent technical qualification (with less than 12 months of professional experience in these fields)
