Primary Purpose: The Data Analyst will assist with reporting and analysis of planning and assessment activities in support of the university’s operational processes and strategic priorities. The incumbent will provide specialized expertise to support the measurement, evaluation, and reporting of institutional performance in areas such as research productivity, faculty activity, financial capacity, and academic programming. The incumbent will frequently be involved in conducting or participating in special projects on behalf of the Provost and Vice-President Academic, Deputy Provost, or other stakeholders supported by the office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic.

Nature of Work: The Data Analyst reports to the Chief Analytics Officer within the office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic. The incumbent will play an integral role in the acquisition, analysis, and dissemination of quantitative and qualitative information in support of institutional planning and decision-making. The incumbent will be involved in a wide variety of projects requiring assimilation and interpretation of data associated with areas of priority for the university. Responsibilities include data gathering, analyzing trends, testing processes/outputs, and developing reports. The position will also support various review processes including the cyclical review of all academic programs and annual review of administrative employee activities.

The Data Analyst will be involved in many projects and initiatives that will be confidential in nature and/or have broad impact across the university. The work is executed in a timely and efficient manner, working under pressure in a fast paced and changing environment, balancing priorities, and competing deadlines. The position routinely works with highly confidential and sensitive content such as information pertaining to university-wide budgetary drivers (that includes salaries and college/unit budgets) as well as data relating to employee characteristics, activities, and complement plans. Because of this, the position requires a high level of discretion, integrity, and independent judgement.

Accountabilities:

  • Produces substantiated recommendations and reports to stakeholders in support of business initiatives, operational efficiencies, and potential strategies often involving sensitive and confidential information.
  • Summarizes and communicates analytical findings, insights, and recommendations via executive-level written reports, briefing notes, and presentations to support evidence informed decision-making at multiple levels within the university.
  • Performs business analysis to understand reporting information needs and requirements and how business rules and workflows translate into data and information.
  • Conducts qualitative and/or quantitative research on internal and external (i.e. peer university) academic, research, and employee complement activities and outcomes.
  • Supports Assessment and Analytics team leads in the development and/or implementation of academic program review, strategic enrolment management, activity cost analysis, and employee complement planning processes and reporting.
  • Assists with the UniForum benchmarking program annual data collection by gathering and reviewing data for submission and by collaborating with and supporting campus stakeholders involved in the data submission process.
  • Conducts quality assessment and assurance reviews on team outputs and deliverables by identifying and documenting issues for resolution before final products, reports, or results are released.
  • Engages in special projects or reviews, many of which are very confidential in nature, at the request of the Provost and Vice-President Academic, Deputy Provost, and/or Chief Analytics Officer.
  • Completes concurrent projects in a timely manner, within agreed-upon deadlines, and in a format appropriate to the specific stakeholders.
  • Promotes a healthy, respectful, collegial, and productive work environment within the office and in interactions with campus and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other related duties or projects as required.

Education: An undergraduate degree in a related field is required. A graduate degree, training in data analytics, qualitative and quantitative research methods, or relevant professional training pertaining to business analysis and/or data analytics would be considered an asset.

Experience: Three to five years of professional experience with data analytics, data modeling, and strategic/business analysis is required. Experience in the ability to interpret and present information to stakeholders through written, graphical, or verbal methods is essential. The ability to think creatively, identify innovative solutions to solve problems, work independently or as part of a team, develop and implement projects that achieve expected outcomes, and produce high quality work in an accurate and timely manner are vital to the success of the incumbent in this role. A high level of proficiency with statistical and data manipulation tools such as Excel, Microsoft PowerBI, SPSS, or Tableau is preferred.

Skills: Highly organized with clear and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently, collaboratively and within a team environment; competency in determining information needs, identifying sources of information, analyzing data, and communicating findings various audiences; strong research and problem solving skills; proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; demonstrated proficiency with contemporary data management and analysis tools; and ability to exercise diplomacy, implement creativity, foster self-motivation, and awareness of how to handle highly confidential information.
