Genomic Data Scientist (m/f/d)

Biomedical data science (BMDS) is a recently founded group within Pharmaceuticals R&D at Bayer. Its objective is to deliver novel insights on therapeutic mechanisms and patient populations through analysis of large human genomics and other multi-modal datasets, in collaboration with internal and external partners, including world leading institutions.

  • Work collaboratively as a member (m/f/d) of the BMDS team, with other Bayer teams, and with external partners, and further, manage multiple projects simultaneously and complete projects in a timely and reliable manner
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and carry out bioinformatics analysis using languages such as R, Python, and Bash
  • Design and conduct of complex analyses to identify novel targets, biomarkers, and other insights relevant for the translation of research projects into clinical development stages with a strong focus on endocrine, metabolism and reproductive indication areas
  • Interpret results of genotype – phenotype association analyses from human genome-wide genotyping, whole-exome, and whole-genome sequencing data as well as association result from other complex Omic data, which may include transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics data
  • Apply biological insights from internal and external data sets, published literature and other resources, and bioinformatics to prioritize genetic discoveries in endocrine, metabolism, and reproductive indication area
  • Summarize and communicate study findings to the BMDS team, as well as other internal and external collaborators
  • Actively identify and engage potential new data sources (internal, publicly available or through collaborators) which help improve our understanding of human disease
  • Survey the literature and attend conferences to incorporate discoveries and findings from the broader genetics community into study opportunities and considerations internally

WHO YOU ARE

  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting sequencing and genome-wide genotyping studies (e.g., variant level QC, statistical association analysis, and interpretation of association signals in complex disease)
  • Experience with standard statistical approaches and tools (e.g., regression, linear mixed models, R, PLINK, GitLab/GitHub), programming experience (e.g., R, Python, SQL, workflow description languages), as well as experience with high performance and cloud computing
  • Experience with machine learning approaches is a plus
  • Ability to test, implement, and troubleshoot new concepts and techniques
  • Ability to summarize data and results to identify patterns, signals, and issues
  • An understanding of human biology to integrate and leverage diverse datasets to identify interesting variants, genes, and genotype-phenotype associations
