The role of Principal Data Scientist is required to accelerate, improve & transform the data & information management capability within the GSQ in line with the GSQ strategic direction to support QLD's resource exploration industry. The role within the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ) provides a high level of professional leadership, strategic direction & project management within project teams & larger key business groups within the GSQ as well as supporting & advising Geoscience Managers & Directors
The role will support GSQ work programs by considering & applying data science tools & techniques to GSQ projects & activities. The role has strong leadership component working closely with the Director Geoscience Information & the Chief Government Geologist to develop strategy & policy to support a culture of data driven decision making across the wider Georesources Division.
Key Duties And Accountabilities
The key duties and responsibilities of the Principal Data Manager include:
- Leading teams of data scientists to develop innovative techniques to extract value from the Geological Survey of Queensland's datasets.
- Design, lead and manage multiple multi-disciplinary projects to match international standards and to address state-wide priorities.
- Identify gaps is current knowledge to guide future project design and deliverables.
- Manage and maintain a highly skilled and motivated professional workforce to design, implement and complete the analytical component of complex scientific and technical projects.
- Provide authoritative, specialist, data science related advice, technical consultancy and project management to GSQ and external clients.
- Provide high-level professional advice and recommendations to both internal and external stakeholders on data science related issues for Queensland.
- Supervise writing, editing, compilation and production of technical reports, products, digital packages and models.
- Work with the Principal Data Manager - Geoscience Information in overseeing the management of GSQ's geoscience and resource databases.
- Provide professional/technical mentoring and support for other GSQ geoscientists.
- Develop networks and consult with peers, departmental employees, clients, industry groups, community groups and other agencies to achieve strategic goals and objects and meet departmental priorities.
- Represent GSQ and the department at the state and national level as required.
- Maintain technical knowledge, competence and excellence in analytics and data science, particularly as it relates to Queensland resources.
- Contribute to the business improvement initiatives within the Geological Survey of Queensland.
- Apply best practice project and budget management, in compliance with departmental financial, human resources and procurement requirement, to ensure milestones are met and schedules and budgets adhered to.
- Other duties as directed and required.
Role Requirements
- Experience with digital tools and digital communication strategies would be highly desirable.
- A degree qualification in Mathematics, Information Technology or Data Science is a mandatory requirement for this role.
- Additional Qualifications in Geology, Geophysics or Earth Sciences would be highly regarded.
