Team Overview:

Preqin’s Data Science team plays a key role in driving initiatives across the organization in line with Preqin’s ambitious 2025 strategy. The Data Science team leverage public and proprietary datasets to develop new products and services to serve the alternative investments industry, including forecasts, estimations, recommendations, and predictions. Furthermore, the Data Science team apply AI and automation to internal processes to further improve operational efficiency.
The ESG Data Scientist will work directly with the EVP, Head of ESG Solutions and embed themselves within the wider cross-functional ESG Solutions team that has the ambition and backing to maintain Preqin’s standing as the leader of ESG data and insights in private markets.

Role Overview:

We are looking for a Data Scientist to support the ESG Solutions cross-functional Business Unit (BU) in developing analytics-based product solutions (e.g., estimation of carbon and other ESG KPIs, development of scoring methodology to measure ESG risk exposures), and macro models related to ESG in the alternative asset industry. This could include forecasts, scenario development and sector assessments, and typically involves close collaboration with the Research Insights team that is responsible for economic and industry analysis and reports at Preqin. We are looking for someone who can innovate in the ESG space around data and methodologies, has the technical know-how to explore their viability, and the communication skills to convey the benefits to the business and customers.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop and implement analytics-based solutions with the ESG BU in close alignment with the relevant stakeholders
  • Design, develop and implement models with Preqin’s in-house economic and financial research team, and in close alignment with the ESG BU to communicate ESG market trends to our clients
  • Help quantify the business impact of possible solutions to shape their design and anticipate the likelihood of success
  • Define and run targeted analysis or experiments to reduce uncertainty before initiating long-term projects
  • Make model limitations transparent while striving for pragmatic and robust approaches
  • Author and maintain ESG methodologies and client-facing documentation
  • Work closely, efficiently, and effectively with ESG BU designers, software engineers, product owners and other stakeholders to find the right solution
  • Collaborate with other data scientists and software engineers to ensure methodologies are sound and implementations follow best practices
  • Ensure models are re-usable and results recorded systematically, while continuously improving them
Essential Requirements for this Role:
  • Background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, or other quantitative field
  • Proficient / intermediate level programming skills, preferably Python.
  • Publication-quality written communication skills (e.g., academic/industry papers, client-facing publications/documentation)
  • Track record of being a supportive peer to provide new ideas or serve as a sounding board
  • Ability to propose creative, efficient, and effective solutions to new types of problems
  • Experience sourcing, cleaning, transforming, analysing and visualising a broad range of data types
  • Comfortable with techniques for both small and large amounts of data
  • Motivation to explore diverse and potentially unknown techniques and problems
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concise at all seniority levels for technical and non-technical audiences

Desirable Requirements:
  • Experience with ESG or sustainability data
  • Experience with econometrics
  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Experience with the financial services industry
  • Experience with AWS cloud services
  • Familiarity with software development tools and technologies (e.g., Docker, Git, test automation)
