The Opportunity
Here at EDF we are looking for a highly motivated Lead Data Scientist, to contribute to existing and new machine learning, data science and digital projects, in collaboration with Customer and Power Generation business units.
You will be joining our UK Research & Development centre, which provides support to all business lines and subsidiaries of EDF in the UK in line with the EDF Group's Cap 2030 project. The R&D Centre is also an integral part of the EDF Group R&D international network.
Our Digital Innovation team operate like an in-house start-up. We are 12 people: developers, data scientists and innovation experts. Our job is to not only keep a beady eye on the most cutting-edge digital technologies, but also to turn those technologies into proof of concepts that show how they could bring value to the business.
As such, we have three broad roles:
Highly technical exploration - We can explore any new digital technology quickly and cheaply, and form an intelligent view (20% of our effort)- Build the ‘brains’ - We will go deep and develop complex tools or algorithms that form the basis of a new service. (70%)
- Advice and support - We support the business to trial or industrialise mature technologies. (10%)
You’ll be equipped with your choice of hardware (PC or Mac), and software including Slack, Google Apps, access to your own favourite tools (you choose) so as long as you are able to travel to our Hove office a couple of times a month, you can be based anywhere in the UK.
The Role & Skills
As Lead Data Scientist, you will lead the development, deployment, and operations of EDF R&D UK Centre’s data science activities. This will involve understanding business needs, working with external partners (suppliers, academics and R&D colleagues) and helping EDF’s business units to maximise the benefit of data science. You will be involved in the recruitment, management, mentoring and development of a small team of data scientists, machine learning specialists and data engineers.
The types of projects you will be involved in supporting Digital Innovation can cover many topics, scopes and clients, both international and local. Broadly, these fall into 5 labs: Artificial Intelligence, Data, UX, Blockchain and Virtual Reality.
If you have experience across the following, we would love to speak to you:
A degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Econometrics or another data-intensive field.- Professional experience with data analytics, data warehouses, big data technologies or machine learning.
- Proven experience designing and building models or algorithms
- Ease of communication and ability to produce technical reports and talks
- Advanced proficiency in an object-oriented programming language
- Proactive – ability to suggest new areas of focus or new solutions to problems.
- Business-oriented with a focus on creating value.
- Ability to learn, understand and apply new technologies.
- Experience at working independently with good self-discipline as well as working in a highly collaborative team.
- Happy to work in a fast-moving, non-hierarchical structure.
- Enthusiasm about digital and data science.
