What is Global Sustainability Strategy Team responsible for?

The team is part of Franklin Templeton Investment Solutions (FTIS) at Franklin Templeton. With a global platform, FTIS offers full spectrum investment expertise with the ability to identify, select and offer solutions from the full suite of Franklin Templeton’s investment strategies as well as external managers.

The team will work in close collaboration with the Sustainability and Stewardship Council leaders to determine and implement the Council’s agenda. Led by the Global ESG Strategy Director, the team will liaise across business functions, identifying talent and nurturing partnerships as we collectively build Franklin Templeton to be a sustainability investing leader.

We are creating a FT Climate Lab to help us accelerate the process now that Franklin Templeton has signed up to the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative, with a commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of Climate Data Scientist?

Purpose: Dedicated focus on research and analysis into climate related impacts on the real economy

  • Work with investment stakeholders to develop solutions to illustrate how our portfolios look through a sustainability lens, considering ESG outcomes and impact, and in particular on potential decarbonisation pathways
  • Work with our investment teams to provide insights into practical applications of climate-related data to identify risks and opportunities in potential investments across asset classes.
  • Research and provide recommendations on climate change methodologies and frameworks
  • Develop a deep understanding of cross-asset trends in ESG and climate, and ensuing opportunities and risks for investors #MID_SENIOR_LEVEL


What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?

  • Systems thinking, quantitative skills and the ability to innovate and leverage data to establish narratives
  • Comfortable handling large and complex multi-dimensional sustainability datasets, or incomplete datasets to offer solutions that can complement/enhance the investment process across our teams.
  • Ability to translate data, analytics and communicate data research ideas across audiences of varied sophistication levels
  • Ability to analyse large and complex data sets, handling unstructured data to design quantitative metrics on sustainability criteria including science-based climate targets
  • Create tools to analyze, monitor and improve the sustainability profile of portfolios, for example through scenario analysis or historical simulations.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly matrixed, global environment and remain empathetic, passionate and resilient
  • Ability to work effectively both as a team player and independently
  • Proven ability to work across different teams and functions to deliver multi-stakeholder projects.
  • MSc or PhD in a sustainable-related field (Natural Sciences, Environmental Studies, Climatology) with at least four years of research experience
  • Experience working with climate models (CMIP5 GCMs, RCMs, etc.), ensemble analysis, uncertainty quantification
  • Preferred modeling experience: flood/hydrological modeling, bias correction/downscaling methods, climate impact assessments
