Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Data Engineers are key development and administrative roles for large financial and other departmental data warehouse implementations. These roles will provide expertise in database design and development to manage and enhance the data warehouse architecture, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) Processes, and Analytics cubes. The Senior Data Engineer positions will also be responsible for consistent performance of these data systems, and for building strategic relationships with our key customers to collaborate on issues, enhancement, priorities and future state roadmaps.
As a Senior Data Engineer, these positions will take a leadership role in guiding the future work and technologies used in the City of Seattle Data Engineering and Analytics team. This will involve creating roadmaps and recommending strategies for data projects involving cloud and on-premises data solutions.
While Database expertise in both Oracle and SQL Server are important skills for these positions, successful candidates will also be depended on to understand processing and server requirements, and to be able to participate in planning future cloud-based implementations.
Primary Job functions:
- Manage and support existing Data Warehouse Solutions. Monitor evening and weekend processes, respond to customers, and needed Seattle IT Staff/roles to resolve issues. Prioritize support work with other planning and development tasks.
- Plan, Build, and implement enhancements to Data Warehouse and Analytical Cube systems. This involves communication and coordination with customers, and analysis of server resource needs, analyzing feasibility of proposed changes or enhancements, building, scheduling, communicating, and implementing updated data products.
- Research, Plan, and Propose future state data analytics using new technologies and possibly cloud systems. Research and understand industry recommended paths to future state technology use. Analyze and propose solutions that consider technical feasibility in our city environment, business cost/value, and resource needs. Participate in high level discussions and presentations with business and Seattle IT management.

Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for the required qualifications.
Education: Successful candidates for these positions will have a BA degree in Computer Science, Business Information systems, Database management, or a related field or equivalent experience.
Experience:
- 5+ years' experience working with data to address business needs, including development of data repositories, warehouses, operational data stores, analytics cubes or related systems.
- Knowledge of database systems, and requirements for large data analytics projects, including the ability to scope processing, memory, and storage needs.
- Experience and knowledge of cloud services for data analytics, including tools and processed for data project migrations, cloud native tools and services for data analytics, deployment processes, security and privacy principles, and cloud service cost strategies.
Desired Qualifications:
Technical/Professional skills needed to succeed:
- Knowledge and experience with multiple database systems and the related tools sets available, for example Oracle, AQL Server, Postgres SQL, Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools, reporting, scheduling and integration tools.
- Understanding of analytics and reporting tools, specifically Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL Server Reporting Services.
- Experience building Data Warehouse systems and analytics systems, including learning, and understanding business needs and creating facts and dimensions, analysis cubes, processing scripts, schedules, and implementing integration packages.
Other Skills Desired:
Communication Skills: Established experience with written, verbal. And illustrative communication. Ability to effectively communicate meaningful technical content with the professionals that perform the various city business functions at our city departments, as well as with Seattle IT technical professionals and various management staff.
Leadership: Experience and ability to provide guidance on processes and technologies used for Data Engineering and Analytics, and to guide customers in their adoption of tools, processes, and technologies.
Team engagement: Serve roles on various City of Seattle, technology teams to provide expertise and support for Information Technology projects that have reporting or analytics requirements. Maintain open contact with Applications, Server, Security, Privacy, and Database teams to address project or program needs and to provide necessary support for the roles of those team.
