Epidemiology Data Analyst

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

Program Overview

The mission of the Bureau of Immunization (BOI) is to prevent the occurrence and transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, influenza, human papillomavirus, and invasive pneumococcal disease, through immunization.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, BOI is developing and implementing a COVID-19 vaccination campaign to reduce the impact of the pandemic on the health care system and the NYC community. The campaign will focus on the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine, ensuring access to the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

Position Overview

The position of Epidemiology Data Analyst is critical to the successful functioning of the Bureau of Immunization's Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention (PHBP) Unit. The PHBP Unit is mandated to identify hepatitis B infections in pregnant and post-partum women and in children that are < 2 years of age. The position of the CRS II in the PHBP Unit is critical to fulfilling the Bureaus obligation to federal authorities to report of cases of vaccine preventable disease, including sending electronic reports of perinatal hepatitis B infections to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a timely manner. The position also serves a critical role as a system administrator for the Bureau of Immunizations surveillance and case management system (Maven) to ensure that necessary data is captured for reporting confirmed cases of perinatal hepatitis B infection to the CDC.

Responsibilities

• Develop, evaluate, and conduct surveillance of hepatitis B infection in pregnant and post-partum women. Ensure that all reported cases are received by the Perinatal Hepatitis B Unit and stored in the electronic surveillance and case management system (MAVEN)
• Confirm and submit electronic reports of perinatal hepatitis B infections to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
• Monitor quality of data received and update missing data by importing electronic data from the Citywide Immunization Registry, Vital Statistics, or other data sources
• Serve as a system administrator for maintaining and enhancing the Maven database: update database model, develop workflows and reports, backup database components, review and evaluate new features and communicate new functionality to Unit staff
• Use SAS statistical software to clean data, perform epidemiological and statistical data analyses for surveillance reports, program evaluation, grant reports, research studies and data requests from local, state, and federal authorities
• Prepare summary tables, figures, and maps to present findings for publication, reports, and presentations; participate in the design and implementation of surveys, evaluations, and research studies; assist in the writing of reports for publication
• May supervise up to two data entry staff
• Attend related meetings and work collaboratively with staff from other Units and Bureaus.
  
  

Qualifications

• Experience cleaning and analyzing large datasets using SAS
• Experience applying epidemiological methods and conducting surveillance case investigations in public health practice
• Experience performing system administrative tasks in the software Maven, including model changes, designing workflows and reports, and troubleshooting EDRI to Maven connections
• Experience in designing studies, calculating sample size, and applying statistical measures of probability
• Excellent computer skills in MS Access, MS Excel, and SAS or equivalent
• Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills
• Masters Degree in appropriate field, MPH required

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
