Description:
Dr. Bethany Caruso and Dr. Sheela Sinharoy’s research group in the Hubert Department of Global Health (HDGH) at Emory University is seeking a data analyst to assist with research focused on gender and social inclusion in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) across multiple countries and regions. Specifically, the research team is developing and validating novel measures of women’s empowerment related to sanitation. The tool has been developed, and was tested both qualitatively and quantitatively in Uganda and India in 2019, and has more recently been deployed in Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, India (three cities), and Bangladesh (two cities) in late 2021 and 2022. The analyst’s role will include assistance with data management, running basic analyses, and carrying out more complex analyses (e.g. exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, item response theory) for scale validation. The analyst will also be expected to contribute to manuscripts and reports, including by preparing tables/figures and writing up methods and results for various analyses.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Creates and maintains a data dictionary and meta data.
  • Supports efforts to ensure that data standards are developed and maintained.
  • Ensures that the uses of data through reports and queries are accurate.
  • Supports business and system re-engineering and architecture development to define future data needs.
  • Serves as an organizational consultant on matters relating to databases by providing expertise to assist users in meeting their needs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

Primary tasks include:
  • Data cleaning and management.
  • Data analyses, ranging from calculation of descriptive statistics through regression and additional complex data analyses as needed.
  • Creating tables/figures and communicating analyses in publications and reports for partners.
  • Assisting with writing descriptions of analyses for academic publications (methods, results).
  • There will be opportunities for the analyst to co-author publications.
  • The position is currently funded for one year, with the possibility to extend based on incoming grants.
For the required cover letter, please describe
(1) your public health experience, including interest/experience with sanitation research and programming as applicable
(2) your experience with data analysis, including what statistical programs you have used in the past and are most comfortable with.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor's degree and one year of experience in data analysis, statistics, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The ideal candidate is skilled in data analysis, is proficient in SAS, R, and/or STATA for statistical analysis, and is proficient or willing to learn how to use MPLUS.
  • The candidate should be able to clean and manage data, open to learning new analysis techniques, and willing and able to independently troubleshoot to seek out solutions to analysis obstacles.
  • The candidate should also have strong scientific writing skills to effectively communicate methods and rationale for analysis techniques and results of analysis for reports and publications.
  • Knowledge about sanitation, particularly in low and middle income settings, is preferred.
NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
