Job description

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join the IT department to help us fulfil the ambitious goals of the organisation. Many of these goals need to be supported with quality data and our ability to process this data at scale. As a Data Engineer, you will join a data engineering team with a broad skillset in the data space.

You will work closely with one of our product teams, agilely, to ensure data is imported & transformed accurately and timely from both internal and external data stores. You’ll work with the Product Owner to capture & deliver new data requirements.

You’ll play a key role in helping to shape our data processing landscape to enable us to modernise and scale these ingestion processes to provide our customers with an industry-leading data offering. This will involve moving to a highly scalable data processing environment in AWS that can handle large volumes of data at high frequency. As such, you’ll need to bring awareness (experience would be a bonus) of big data processing tools, concepts & architectures.

Key Responsibilities:

The Data Engineer will:

  • Work with the Product Owner to scope, plan & estimate new data processing needs. - Build data pipelines (SQL/ SSIS) to ingest data from internal/ external data stores and transform the data as needed,
  • Work with the wider product team to ensure data deliveries are fit for purpose, relevant & value is being maximised,
  • Have strong T-SQL knowledge and be able to debug, optimise, and performance tune existing complex SQL Server procedures/ functions,
  • Be able to work to sometimes tight timescales and adapt as source data changes without warning,
  • Have sound knowledge of cloud data pipeline tools (AWS preferred), architecture, big data systems and how to scale these to process high data volume/ velocity. Experience here is a plus,
  • Be passionate about data quality and the service we provide through data to our customers. - Understand the difference between structured data, unstructured and semi-structured data and the different ways each can be processed.

Skills/ Experience:

  • SQL Server (T-SQL, Query Optimisation, Indexing, Partitioning),
  • SSIS,
  • Powershell,
  • Data Modelling,
  • Data Exploration (Postman, WSDL, JSON),
  • Python,
  • Strong analytical & problem solving skills,
  • AWS (Glue, Lambda, Redshift, Athena),
  • Experience in big data technologies would be great.
