The OVO Group's purpose is to drive progress towards net zero carbon living. To reach Plan Zero , we need everyone to come together - not just as customers buying energy, but as members with a common goal. As part of this ambitious plan, our goal is to become the 'Leading Employer in the UK' by 2030. If you think you could be the talent we're looking for, then come and join the adventure!
We launched in 2009 with a mission to change energy for the better. Since then, we've welcomed over a million members, planted a million trees, and set our sights on helping save the planet.
As a Group , we're working to become a net zero carbon business by 2030, while helping our OVO Energy members halve their carbon footprints at the same time.
Green energy and technology are great tools to fight the climate crisis with. But it's people power that will rewrite history.
So we're building a zero carbon team inside and out. Of people who share our values, feel inspired by our mission, and want to make change happen. When you work for OVO, it's not just a job. It's the work of a lifetime. And we want the sharpest minds to help.
Up for the challenge?
Where in the world of OVO will I be working?
We are looking for a Lead Data Scientist with strong technical expertise, and hands-on experience building end to end data science products. Primarily you will work within cross functional, product teams, and will be required to consult internally on specific data science or analytics initiatives. You will play a key role in ensuring that technical and non-technical stakeholders are able to make data-driven decisions by extolling the benefits of a data-led approach and identifying opportunities for collaboration that would help us to achieve our vision.
You'll ensure that data science efforts are aligned towards achieving the team's objectives and wider company goals. As a senior member of the team you will influence product decisions identifying new data centric opportunities to deliver on companies objectives.
As Lead Data Scientist you will contribute to defining and supporting best practices across teams and help to organise the data science community of practice activities.
What will I be doing?
Take a leading role in demonstrating the value data science can add to teams across OVO Energy.
Work with stakeholders to understand their data science needs and deliver projects (or offer guidance) to drive their strategy.
Own the delivery of projects from start to finish, determining the right level of time to spend (applying 80/20 principle appropriately) and evaluate value post delivery.
Use your knowledge of statistics, operations research and machine learning/AI to quickly assess different models and select the most appropriate approach. Using these same skills, rigorously assess the validity of any results and ensure that conclusions are understood by the relevant stakeholders and actionable.
Utilise standard data science tools and programming languages (SQL, Python, Github) to both carry out analysis and build robust models. Through a good understanding of engineering principles, design, productionise and test these models.
Work with Production Engineers to put your analysis and models into production
Communicate and present complex data to audiences of all technical levels. Use appropriate data visualisations to tell a story with data.
Coach junior Data Scientists and contribute to defining data science standard methodologies.
Take a lead role in our journey towards a well managed data science infrastructure environment (think MLOps framework).
Play an active role in data science community activities that stimulate a culture of collaboration, openness, and innovation.
Contribute to identifying potential opportunities and risks of future data science projects.
Is this the job for me?
Extensive, proven data science work experience.
Experience delivering data science models in a production setting on a cloud environment.
Understanding of engineering best practice, including CI/CD, containerisation and testing.
Ability to simplify large problems into comprehensive testable hypothesis balancing: model metrics, team effort and potential business value.
Deep theoretical and practical understanding of data science algorithms and statistics.
Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders to drive meaningful conversations and actions that will have a direct impact on project planning and delivery.
Experience coaching & mentoring junior Data Scientists and interest in organising and participating in the data science community of practice technical discussions and presentations.

Transitioned to data science from a data analyst background - our team is a talented bunch of data analysts and data scientists and we need a lead who can cut across both areas.
Experience working in a startup in a similar role, working in cross functional teams.
An understanding of the UK energy market.
The confidence to put your hand up when you don't know something - we don't expect you to have all the answers but we'd want you to know where to start.
