The Ministry of Finance plays a key role in establishing, implementing and reviewing government’s economic, fiscal and taxation policies. The Policy and Legislation Division provides policy analysis and advice to the Minister of Finance, Cabinet, the Deputy Minister of Finance, and other senior government officials. The Division is responsible for anti-money laundering policy, tax policy and financial and corporate sector policy, and directs the implementation of related government decisions through the development and preparation of legislation.
The Finance Real Estate and Data Analytics Unit (FREDA) provides policy analysis and advice to government in support of legislative frameworks and data analysis to support government’s anti-money laundering objectives. The Data Analysis Branch within FREDA leverages the Ministry of Finance’s data holdings to provide policy analysis and advice to advance government and ministry policy goals and priorities, including tax policy, and detecting and deterring money laundering in British Columbia. This includes providing advice and recommendations on how to improve the quality and availability of data available for the Ministry’s policy work and how to address legal barriers to using and sharing data for policy analysis.
The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for managing specific data analysis projects. The Senior Data Scientist uses their technical knowledge and experience with complex data analysis and modelling techniques to provide analysis related to tax policy and other Ministry priorities such as money laundering and the real estate market. The Senior Data Scientist provides timely analysis and policy advice to provide insights to key decision-makers including the Minister, Deputy Minister, Cabinet and Treasury Board, government caucus committees, and government and independent regulatory agencies.
