Discovery Data Sciences (D3S) is part of the In Silico Discovery department within Therapeutics Discovery. It is responsible for providing data analytics and Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning (AI/ML) support to the discovery portfolio of Janssen, from Hit Identification phase up to Late Lead Optimization. Within D3S, we have an open position for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Molecule Property Prediction Team, a global group of AI/ML experts with diverse backgrounds that support all disease area project teams with pioneering predictive models aiming to reduce attrition and drive design-make-test cycles.

Key Responsibilities


  • Leverage existing extensive drug discovery datasets and support and inform relevant data generation and acquisition
  • Develop, deploy and maintain AI/ML predictive models for general properties relevant to pharmacokinetics and toxicology
  • Encourage AI/ML democratization and understanding through the development of our AutoML framework, which enables less specialized stakeholders to build models for various additional properties, and periodic trainings to end-users from diverse backgrounds
  • Provide ad hoc support to disease area projects, tackling project-specific compound annotation and design questions with AI/ML and data analytics.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from medicinal and computational chemistry, screening, pharmacological safety, therapeutic areas, IT and ML operations to bring better and safer medicines faster to patients
  • Contribute to the scientific weight of the department by authoring peer-reviewed papers and presenting at relevant conferences and playing an active role in outreach and shaping external collaboration landscapes
Job Qualifications


  • PhD or equivalent experience in machine learning/AI, drug design with a relevant publication track record is required.
  • At least 2 years experience with machine learning/AI or drug design is required.
  • Experience with Transformer models is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of Python and affinity with AWS (or similar cloud environments) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with relevant frameworks like PyTorch is a plus.
  • Project management or project coordination experience or consultancy experience is a plus.
  • Prior knowledge of cheminformatics is desired.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and a strong passion for applying science in real-life industrial problems is required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $111,000 to $192,000. The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.


The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits: Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year, Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year, Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year, Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year.
